Leaving San Antonio Felt sooo great. But before we left we were invited to have dinner with our new friends from the Navidad tienda.
I didnt really know what was going on because I was gone when Perry and I were invited for a going away supper. I had gone to the feria to try to sell some artesanias. When I returned to the marmoleria, I found a note that Perry had left a note for me. It had a few details, but they were on the side of the paper I didn�t look at. All I saw was something about eating dinner when he got back. So I waited a while and made rice for myself after a couple of hours because I figured he ate while he was out. Then of coarse, about 10 minutes after I ate the rice, he arrived with Michael, Glorimar and Jacqueline, or Navidad tienda friends. We headed to their house for a suprise VEGAN going away meal. ummmmmummumumum MAN WAS IT GOOD! Friends and Meals like this make it hard to leave.They cooked gnocci and made the best looking salad I have seen since I left Chicago! It was awesome!
The next day we got a ride out of the busy part of San Antonio and slept outside of the National Guards office. This would start the trip to the boarder of Colombia and Venezuela. We figured we would have to average about 70 km a day to spend new years eve in Merida, Venezuela.
As usual the first couple of days back on the bike were a little tough but it always feels great to be riding. We were very lucky several times and approached by super nice people in cars that offered their house, food, or info. on the closest safe place to sleep. The first car to talk to us was the Ochoa family. These people were actually interested in more than what is answered from the FAQ. The whole Ochoa family was at the house, which meant about 50 people were hanging out. One of the sons is studying to be an engineer and interested in building a recumbent.
The next day we started early and were lead to the old highway by 2 of the sons. Later a car full of old guerillas pulled up to us and started talking while we were riding. We pulled over and they offered beer. yum. We followed them to a tienda, had a short break, and talked politics for 10 minutes. Johnny, one of the guys, was blind and offered his place for us sleep at when we pass through. Later, we got into the city and looked for internet but were out of luck. All of the cyber cafes had lost service. While we were at one of the places, a farmer started talking to us and offered his place to us. He was really cool. He took us to the farm in his truck and showed us all of the animals and gave us veggies to cook dinner and breakfast. The next day he took us back to the main highway. On the way there the Venezuelan Police saw us in the back of the truck and pulled him over. They started to search all our bags and found the granite pipes I had made and seemed to have a problem. After about 10 minutes we convinced them they were unused, for tobacco and only for sale. All of which is true. We got to the highway and started riding. At the end of the day we had reached the town that Johnny lived in. We gave him a call and he sent his son to meet us. Oh yeah, it was x´mas eve by this time. So I might have skipped a day or something. But anyway, we got a couple bottles of wine for dinner at Johnny´s because we thought we would be celebrating with everyone that was in the car. It turned out to be a much more relaxing night. Perry went to pick up Chinese food and after eating we went to the cities x-mas celebration. This was pretty much a strip that people drive up and down, blasting music, and blasting fuegos artificiales. There was a park with a bunch of vendors. We saw 2 kids that probably were not over 11 years old trying to box or fight. The funny part was that a huge group of people had gathered around them like there was actually a fight. So that lasted all of 6 seconds and we walked around looking at the same crap for an hour with Johnny Jr. and went back to the house to sleep.
The next day we were told that we had a day of riding Puro Plano. This was close to the truth but not close enough. We were riding against the wind for 20 or 30 minutes and then the road curved in a great way. Wind on our backs and almost puro plano. This helped us and made the day easy. We found a place called Agua Blanca and were granted permiso to camp and sleep in the saints barn. Agua Blanca is a cold water spring that comes out of a cave and makes a small river. The cave is full of idols and statues of people. A statue of a 90ish latino gangsta stands over the cave enterance with a hand gun in his belt. Inside the cave people leave food offerings and light candles. The cave is really cool and I wanted to go exploring but don´t have time or equipment to be safe about it, but bathing in there was nice. The next day we left for Guanare and rode 125km. When we got into the city some dude on a motorcylce said he would help us find the Bomberos. 5 minutes later we saw a bombero vehicle and he asked them for us. Then we followed him to a newstation where he told a reporter what we were doing and we made plans for an interview in the morning. After that he boaught us smoothies and showed us where the bomberos station is. After talking and hanging out a bit we were told we had beds in an airconditioned room. How awesome is that?!
When morning came we ate and hit the road. The reporter didn´t show up in time so we told the Bomberos to let the reporter know what was up. About 15 minutes later the reporter had found us riding and pulled over to interview us. This was probably the laimest interview. Absolutely boring, but whatever, so we were back on the road again. We rode about 75km, until we got to La Yuka, a town with a nice river to camp at.
The next day we rode towards Baranitas. This is where the road started to go up. We only rode about 45 km and had to start looking for a place to get food and sleep. When we asked around, we found a super nice couple Mari and Ahli. They both speak a bit of English so it was a bit easier than usual. After talking to Ahli, he told me his wife was an athlete. Uh, ok. Mari is a marathon runner and is planning a marathon in Cleveland. We asked were to buy food and they told us they would take us to thier house and cook for us. Then they told some kids to take us to the nearby river to wash up. Woohooo, mountain water river. Clear and Cold!
After the river we walkded back up towards the street and were given 3 cacao fruits. Raw cacao is weird. The only part that I know is safe to eat is the outside of the seed. It´s sweet, a bit sour and slimy. After eating the slimy part you can put the cacao in the sun to dry, then roast and that´s cocoa.
We met up with Mari and Ahli and hopped in their car. Dinner was great, we met thier son, and took pictures. Mari has a trophy room full of marathon recuerdos and trophies. They took us back to our bikes and I hung my hammock under a car port and Perry slept in the back of truck.
The next morning we decided it would be best for us to hitchike up the mountain in order to get to Merida in time. This was a great idea. I really wanted to cycle the mountain, but also wanted to be near a city for New Years Eve. I think it took all of about 10 minutes to get picked up by a flatbed truck without walls. He pulled over where they were drying coffee beans on the road the day before and we loaded the bikes. This fellow was able to give us a ride into the next mountain pueblo, where we had some coffee, looked around, and got picked up by a really cool guy that has great taste in rock and roll. He wanted us to sit up front and we were happy to. He was rocking out to Jannis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and a cd full of great music. He took us all the way to the top of the mountain. There we got out checked out Parque Sierra Nevada, saw a nice lake, ate a bit and started the coast down, into La Musui. This was all down. I passed Perry and then he passed me somewhere and I asked some people which way he went. After they pointed me in the direction I started riding again, but eventually just couldn´t resist the urge to stop for pictures and a puff. As soon as I put my things away the Police pulled up and started with the questions. They told me my friend was below waiting for me for 45 minutes. I told them why I stopped and showed them the pictures I took. Time flies when your high in the mountains. They said Perry was about 3 km down the road so I started coasting and couple of minutes later saw him on the side of the road talking to some people that looked like they new how to have fun. We all talked for a bit and then they took us up to their camping spot. This just happened to be another awesome place that had some hot springs and a nice pool to get into. It was work getting to it but totally worth it. The roads were so steep we had to walk our bikes more than half way to the garage of a nice guy that let us keep our bikes there overnite. From there we packed a day pack and hiked the rest of the way up the mountain.
When we got to the campsite, some of thier friends had already cooked food and there was enough for everyone. We ate, relaxed, enjoyed the view and got drunk. Eventually we cooked, ate more, and stumbled our way along the side of the mountain to the hot springs. It was quite late by this time and nobody else was at the springs. We had the place to ourselves. We continued to drink and hiked back to camp. The water was nice but it seemed like the pool was too big for the water to stay hot enough to be confortable for more than 45 minutes. So back to the hammocks. Mine was litereally hanging from 2 trees on the side of the mountain. The pitch was steep enough to make it a bit tricky to get in and out of the hammock without sliding down the side of the mountain a bit. Fortunately it levelled off a tiny bit about 10 feet down. Waking up the next morning was amazing. It was the first morning we had to actually sleep in and relax. I climbed out of my cacoon around 11 and was still awestruck at the view. I LOVE THE MOUNTAINS! After I climbed up to the tents I just sat staring into the clouds and mountains enjoying the view. We made some dreadlocks for our new friends, ate and started hicking back to the bikes. By the time we got back to the garage it was already passed 4. We coasted down to the highway, where I saw Perry waiting, traded e-mail info. and said our goodbys. We asked if there was another place close to sleep and they told us there was a park pretty close.
We stopped at the first fruiteria and got some veggies for dinner. We coasted down to Parque Alberto Carnival and started looking around for a good place to camp. Everyone told us it was free but we were approached by the park vigilante(security guard) and he tried to tell us it cost money. We told him we didn´t have any and then Perry went and had a talk with his wife while I gathered wood for the fire. We didn´t have any problems the rest of the night.
The next morning we coasted into Merida. After a beer and some super yummy vegan chocolate with hazelnuts, we went to La Biblioteca because we heard it was a place we might be able to find interesting people. We met some nice people, but some cops also met Perry. One of the cops pulled Perry´s machete out of his sleeping mat sheath and threatened to throw Perry in jail. He said it was un Arma Blanca and that Perry needed permision to have the machete in the city. Basically they just stole a very important tool from Perry and when he tried to explain why he had it the told him to leave or go to jail. ONce again what did we learn?, COPS SUCK! They are the criminales.
I got out of there as quickly as possible before they saw the 2 machetis on my bike. Perry met me 2 blocks away at a hotel. I was inquiring about prices and they were crazy expensive. We decided to go back up the mountain a little to the Bomberos that we passed on the way down. They greeted us with open arms and said we could sleep there. I wasn´t sure how much energy I would have to celebrate new years eve, but I was happy to have a place to sleep. After talking a lot and making some dinner, we met the Boss. He was super cool and is trying to plan a bomberos bike tour of Venezuela. He told us to make ourselves at home. Just when I thought I would be going to sleep early, he told us that they were going to "China Town" of Merida to make sure the display doesn´t get out of control. Then he told us we could go with if we wanted. Now how could we pass up a ride in FIRETRUCK to a HUGE firworks display? We couldn´t. It turned out the the street had been shut off to traffic and fireworks were already being set out to light. The street was scattered with firworks and we had the best view of all, directly in front of them all. There were huge 12 inch steel cyclinders aimed towards the sky. The first one made a crazy loud explosion as it rocketed into the air and burst into colors that lit the cloud filled sky. It was about an hour later when they stopped. Some of them shot so high we couldn´t even see them explode because of the clouds, but as the firworks fell they flooded the clouds with trails of fire. After the fireworks display ended, the bomberos drained the hoses loaded everything into the truck and we took off. They drove us around the city stopping at randomn places wishing everyone a FELIZ AÑO NUEVO. By the time we got back to their station it was about 2:30 a.m. My fatigue had left me as I was talking to the bomberos. I was unaware of the time until Perry told me it was almost 3. I went to sleep and woke around 8a.m. I don´t know how my sleeping works, but it´s weird. Sometimes I need it and sometimes I don´t. But All day long the tienda across the street from the Bomberos was shooting of rockets that don´t do much except shoot into the air, make lots of noise, and set off car alarms.
Perry and I walked around some to check out Merid but almost everything was closed the whole day. Eventually I decided to grill some veggies. WE ate and I went to the hammock to relax from walking around all day. Then I fell asleep and woke up the next morning (jan. 2) around 7a.m. We packed the bikes, took a couple of pics with the bomberos and hit the road.
That brings me to yesterday. We rode about 85 km, almost all of it down the mountain but the wind was so strong we were both still working. Perry was working a lot harder than me because of his highth and bike, but we made it to El Vigia. We had to go through 3 tunnels to get here. The first one was over 1Km long and uphill. That sucked. At first I think tunnels are cool. And I´m sure a lot of other people think they are cool also, but they are quite the opposite. Usually hot, stuffy, full of horrible car, truck, and bus exhaust. Then came the other 2 tunnels, and one of them was over 2.5 km long, luckily they were
downhill. When we got to El Vigia we headed to the Bomberos because it was getting late. The first place actually said no, we were a bit surprised. So we asked for suggestions and they pointed us to the airport bomberos and nations guard. Well national guard sucks but the other bomberos don´t. They let park our bikes and welcomed us after talkling for a few minutes. They even shared their yummy vegan garbonzo tamale type things. And they have internet, which is allowying me to type this long-ass boring story that fails to mention all the minor and a lot of major details.
So that´s a bit of what´s been going on. Maybe we´ll post more pictures soon.
