Leaving Cartegena and Colombia
Leaving somewhere really great sometimes gets really really hard. Austin and I found that out in many ways over and over. But eventually we got on our bikes again and started going east. First to Taganga (seperately) then with two other cyclists from Taganga to Venezuela. Read on and leave comments please.
So we ended up hanging are longer and longer in Cartegena. Originally we were just going to be there for a going away party, which was amazing, but instead we ended up staying another two weeks. Spencer came back from his trip to Taganga and Ciudad Perdido and so we went with him, Legia (a girl that Austin got to really like) and Marianna to Playa Blanca for the second time. It was another crazy adventure getting there and we arrived just as the sun dropped into the sea. Then that night there was a huge rainstorm and Austin and I were the only ones who had shelter (our hammocks, designed for one person). Well Legia bunked with Austin, Marianna bunked with me, and Spencer ended up hiding under the table all night. Nobody was really all that dry.
The next day Marianna wasn't feeling well so she went home. The rest of us stayed and had a great time swimming in the coral, cooking on the fire, and smoking lots of joints on this beautiful beach.
Again, the plan was to go back to Cartegena and then leave right away again. But it happened to be some kind of cultural week in Cartegena, so we stuck around. Ari, a guy from the hostel, gave a Tango demonstration and we decided to stay for that. Afterwards there were going to be free classes in Tango 3 days later. I was sick of waiting around, so I just we on my out to Taganga. Austin stuck around and followed me 3 or 4 days later. He told me he had a lot of fun. I'm sure he did, but I just had to get out of there or else I thought we would never ever leave. We're on a bike trip, right?
My first day out from Cartegena brought me to a beach about 40km before Barranquilla where I stayed the first night. My right knee was killing me by the end of the day. I was out of shape and did a lot of cycling. It's also the knee that I jammed really really hard while I was on a bus in Cartegena. But the beach was nice, food was cheap, and the people there were friendly. The next day I rode the short ride to Barranquilla where I spent a while looking for a bike shop to get a few cheap parts. It was only 40k but by the time I got there my knees where almost dead. I found a bike shop, got what I needed, and went and found a cheap hotel for the night.
The next day I started leaving the city and before I even got out of the city limits, the cable for my rear derailer broke. I ended up having to cycling all over searching for a cable which is long enough for my bike (while is bigger than any other bike you'll find in Colombia). It took me over two hours and I ended up just having to cut the casing for my cable to make the shorter cable reach. I rode all over town in the hardest gear, which totally destroyed my knees. But now it works great, better that I ever remember it working before. I should replace all my cables (and if you have a bike, you should replace all you cables too). And right outside of the final bike shop were buses to Santa Marta (where I wanted to go). Well, I hopped onto a bus and went. From Santa Marta it was just a short 12k ride to the nearby town of Taganga.
I did something in Taganga that I hadn't done in 11+ years... I ate some fish. It was good. It was in soup. I thought I'd give it a try. It left me with a strange feeling because of the dead animal and all, but I think I'll eat a bit more fish sometimes. Especially since I'm here on the Caribbean.
I spent a few really nice days in Taganga and nearby Santa Marta. I met a lot of really cool people including a Colombia girl that I met in Cartagena my first night in Taganga. She was staying in Santa Marta and so we met up a few times while I was around. The rest of my time was spent at the beach and one day in Santa Marta I went to a dentist to get two cavities taken care of (total cost... $10). I'd had that pain in my tooth for a long time but waited to get out of Cartegena because it's so expensive there. Now I can eat and drink all temperatures of food and crunchiness.
Also, and this is really big news, I met two other cyclists in Taganga. They are Augustin and Emilio and they are from Argentina. They also happened to be on their way to Venezuela. So they stuck around Taganga with me, drink beer and rum in the evenings and hanging out on the beach during the day, until Austin finally arrived. Augustin, Emilio, and I also spent a lot of time with a Basque guy, Alberto. Alberto ended up making Austin and I both necklaces which double as red noses (for clowning) out of string and knots, like those bracelets. I really love my little red nose.
So, Austin, Augustin, Emilio, and I left together to go to Tyrona National Park, our first ride together. They both have mountain bikes and Augustin has a trailer that he made himself. They've come all the way from Miramar, Argentina along the west coast of S. America. Well, our first day took us climbing a bit and was actually really quite a slow ride, and we were slow getting started too. By the time we got to the park entrance, it was closed. But that was all for the best because we ended up camping for two nights a little bit further down the coast at a beach called Los Angeles. It was a beautiful place to camp. One night I caught some really nice craps for dinner (Austin didn't have one) and I ate an animal for the second time. It was really really really really really really good. Austin went coconut crazy and ended up eating, and I'm just guessing, about 25 of them over the course of 48 hours. It's also really good that we found that beach because it saved us a LOT of money. 5000 Pecos each at the beach or 50,000 each just to get into the park plus more for camping. What a deal.
After we left Los Angeles, we headed along to coast on our way to Venezuela. Well, we were told to make sure to stop at Valencia to get some organic chocolate. We ended up staying for two nights in this jungle paradise. We had chocolate, bananas, other fruits, I ate fish again, and had a really great time with the people both visiting the organic chocolate farm and living there permanently. We had no electricity and survived by candle light and instruments. What a great time. I also got to meet Rapunzel. A Colombian girl who's working on getting the chocolate farm all connected to communities around the world. We spent a lot of time talking together. She took us, on our second day, to a nearby waterfall where we went swimming. What a really great time. Austin and I are looking forward to going back there. But time was running out. We had just 5 days left to leave Colombia and about 225km to the border. So we had to leave when we wanted to stay.
But on we went. Somehow we all managed to do two back to back 100km days, which is really hard in the heat. Every night we ended up at another place where we could sleep for free. First in Perico, really close to a flamingo reserve (we didn't see any). The second day we were in the last city of Colombia, Rioacha. We changed our money to dollers so we could sell them on the black market in Venezuela (you get double the official exchange rate). The second night we were in the middle of nowhere and exactly where we were warned not to camp because it wasn't safe. So we ended up cycling in the dark and rain to Cuatro Vias and slept in the police station's garden. Then it was just a bit more than 25km to the border. We stopped in Maicao for a while to eat and get some water. Then we headed to the border, just 12km away, with three days left in our visas.
So, the border was a really big question for us. The US ambassador had recently been kicked out by Chavez. I tried to find information on the net about visa requirements and nothing was consistent anywhere I looked. And to get a visa was supposed to take three days. I didn't know what was going to happen when we got there. Well, we ended up just getting stamped and sent along on our way. We would have been a lot quicker through the border if Emilio hadn't gotten sick. In fact, just as he was handing over is passport, he had to duck into the bushes to puke.
Well, we got into Venezuela. We are here now. But our adventures of Venezuela will have to wait for another time.
I must say that I feel really lucky to have met and to be able to travel with Augustin and Emilio. They are really great guys and it's put a new twist to our adventures. Especially since they don't speak English. My Spanish has improved a lot, Austin's too. But I'm sure there will be more about them in the next story.
