Brief for...
2 months in Guatemala.
A couple weeks in Antigua. 1 week of language school, it was a waist of money and time because the teacher would not teach what I wanted. Instead she wanted to spend a few days on chapter 1 and 2. So no more spanish school in Antigua. I'll study and learn more on my own.
Thank you Linda for the supplies and trip to the Pacaya Volcano. Ariel has a cool mom!
A couple of weeks in San Andres Ixtapa at Maya Pedal. San Andres is so friendly. I started building a 6 speed chopper at Maya Pedal. We went to Chimaltenango for the weekend fair to demo. bici-macinas. That was a fun ride.
2 days later Ariel, Oldie and I rode to San Lucas on Lake Atitlan, then mostly to Santiago, Atitlan, then hopped on a chicken bus because it was so dark and we still needed to find a cheap place for the night. This Ride was kind of insane. We left from san Adres early. I thought it would take most of the day. It took a more than a full day. We went on the south side of the lake because we heard about construction on the north side of the lake and didn't want to deal with it. hwy 1 to hwy11 to hwy 14. We were under the impression it was all paved, we were wrong. About 30 kilometers up and down very steep, gravel and dirt road. This Really slowed us down a lot, but it was totally worth it. The view was amazing. We saw clouds creep into a valley between mountain tops. The mountain sides were different shades of lush green. We stopped for a snack and break at a tienda while on the dirt road to ask how much further until we reached paved roads. That's where we met a really nice but extremely drunk 20 something year old. He was insistent that he show us the way. So we continually refused and cycled off. After we left, he got on his Dirt motorcycle and tried to catch up with us. I was ahead of Ariel and Oldie and decided to wait a bit for them. These hills are insane. I'm surprised I was able to ride up them. I almost lost balance several times. There was so much loose gravel and dirt and they were so steep my rear wheels were loosing traction and just spinning. This was a first for me but I didn't have all of my luggage, just one full backpack. I don't think I could have done it fully loaded. Anyway I'm waited for them to catch up. First Oldie then Ariel slowly climbed up the hills and around the sharp curves. I noticed that Ariel had stopped about 30 meters away and was trying to fan bugs away from her face while standing with the bike between her legs. Then she yell that she was getting attacked by bees. I'm thinking "what the hell" so yell at her to get off her bike and run away from the area. She did, and ran towards me. I got of my seat and grabbed the water bottle. As soon as she got close enough I started spraying water around her face( or directly in her face) to get the bees away. Then they started trying to attack me. I start running away with my hands knocking them off my face. I only got stung once, on my eye-brow. As if this isn't crazy enough, the drunk guy from the tienda had caught up with us but was stumbling over. He had fallen off his motorcycle and lifted my bike completely off the ground but upside down. I think he was just trying to move it out of the street while we were dodging bees, but why didn't he just roll the thing on it's wheels. So I tell him to put it down and just as I yell he drops the bike on it's side, bending the steering arm. Then He tried to move it again. By that time I had gotten the bees off and away and then had to get him away from the bike. He just wouldn't leave. It was ridiculous. I told him that he had broken my bike in spanish and he still wouldn't leave. The nice drunk guy was just trying to help but had made a bad situation a lot worse and still would not walk away. I was already excited from the bees and pissed about the bike and yelling at him. So finally in an attempt to scare him away and try to keep him from "helping" any more, I get to my backpack and pull out my pocket knife. This is when it gets even funnier because this is completely out of character for me. So I pull out the knife that usually when I push the button that releases the spring loaded blade, it whips out quickly no problems and seems like it would be intimidating. Of coarse it doesn't work when I want it to I'm standing there trying to pull the blade to the open position. I get it open and start pointing it at the guy telling him to leave in Spanish. Ariel and Oldie, were completely surprised at what I had done. Ariel thinks I'm about to stab this guy and Oldie starts pushing him away. I told Ariel that I was just trying to scare him away since we would leave us alone and Oldie had to really push him to get him to back off. So things settle down, drunk guy backed off but was still sitting on the ledge of a bridge trying to explain that he didn't break my bike and that he was sorry. I was trying to bend the steering arm back but couldn't get enough leverage so I put back on and we told the guy everything was alright, no problems and to go home. I felt really bad about the whole thing but was also really frustrated at the guy.
We continued slowly up the hill and get to more really steep downhills but still no paved roads. Ariel was having a lot of trouble with the roads. I know wasn't used to it and figured she was probably walking her bike. Suprisingly enough she was staying on it, determined to ride, until she whiped out. We clean her wounds and continued. When we reached the pavement I figured we wouldn't have much more to cycle because we had already gone over 50 Km. The hills got even steeper and curvier but we got to the top of whatever mountain we were climbing and The clouds were really thick. I had to follow closely behind a truck so I could see it's lights. drops of water started to form on my arm and leg hairs as I decended through the clouds. I pulled over at another tienda that seemed about 30 minutes down. We got some atol and put some pants over my shorts. By the time we got to San Lucas atitlan, the last boat had already left for San Pedro and my right knee was really soar. This is the first time my knee has bothered me from riding. It was more than fatigued. We checked on Busses to Santiago but were told from several people that no more busses go there that late. So we climb back on the bikes and start racing against sunset. Eventually it's pitchblack. This is a problem for me because I didn't have a front or rear light for the recumbent. I had purchased a rear light with turn signals and brake lights but it broke off when I raced down the road from the other san Lucas(near Guate.) into Antigua. The vibrations from the road broke the mounting hardware. That was the fastest I have ever ridden on a bicycle.
So we try riding together so Ariels and Oldie's lights would help, but it was really slow even downhill. We flag down a chicken bus, load up fast and relax the last 5 km into Santiago.
The next morning we took a small boat across Lake Atitlan. This was a very slow but muy bonito boat ride into San Pedro. The lake is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes Ariel and Oldie ride off to meet up with Carlos from MayaPedal. I found Trippies, but the door was locked. I "CACKAW KAW" as loud as I can and expected to hear an even louder one from Perry. Then a young woman named Holly, from Brighton let me in. Perry had gone swimming. I move my bike into the hostel garden, introduce myself and was welcomed by a group of Israelies. They were all really nice and intstantly understood why Perry had been rushing me to get there. It was super-chill! Later I went to the lake with the others hoping I would run into Perry. Appearently I had missed him, but the lake was amazing. Very clear water and Amazing view!
Later we met up with the rest of the people at Trippies. A couple of days later we all left. I took a bus back to Chimaltenango because I didn't want to stress my knee. I was fortunate enough to make the mistake of getting on the wrong bus. It took me to Chichicastenango. ChiChi is known for it's huge and amazing artesian market. It's Supposedly the largest market in all of Central America. The vendor tents don't stop, they line the streets making them only passsable by walking. What an amazing walk it is. So many colors and beautiful garments. I looked around for about an hour and found a bus to Chimal then biked back to MayaPedal.
Next day, Perry showed up and we spent about a week there working, goofing around and waiting for the hammocks and tires to arrive in Guatemala city. San Andres is amazing and I really look forward to returning sometime. In the short amount of time I was there, Carlos and Joana had 3 parties. 1 for reaching water (man made water well) at Carlos's farm and 2 for volunteers leaving MayaPedal. We worked on bikes and Perry fixed a bunch of wheelchairs. A newspaper came out and interviewed people and took pictures of the bicic-macinas.
As soon as we heard the package arrived Perry and I got our stuff loaded up to go to Guate. This is where we take different route than Ariel and started a new chapter in our travels. We thought we would see her and Oldie one more time in Guatemala city before continuing on but Ariel lost Gianninas number and couldn't get in touch with us. A couple nights there, I got lights and a bike computer. Yeah!
Mixco Viejo is another amazing archeological site. Muy Tranquilo. We were the only group people there. Shout outs to Mario, Giannina and her family and everyone we met at MayaPedal.
Up ahead is a mad dash through Central America to meet up with a friend from Chicago in Colombia.
