wake up, still sick, travel far, bike breads a lot and new parts work great!
So the next day we started a little late, but got some grub in our bodies. I still couldn?t eat much but was feeling a little better. we started biking towards Tepanco. The riding was much easier. not as many super steep hills. After passing Tepanco I got a flat tire and was needing a different rear wheel. So after I hitchhiked back to Altepexi to get a new rim. I knew this might be difficult because the village is so small and probably would not have a rim to fit my bike. I was right, but the guy was really nice and drove his motorcylce to tehuacan got a used wheel and put it on the bike for 125 pesos. But now the rear cassette was floating all over place and causeing the chain to come off. So I took it back the next morning and he rebuilt the wheel with my old hub, and newer spokes and rim. Now it was looking good and feeling great! We had some great downhill rides but the wheel only lasted about half a day. I taco?d the new rim and had to hitchike to Teotitlan. I asked where a bike shop was but people were pointing in opposite directions telling me 15 km away. Then a really nice guy who go?s by Rato walked with me to 6 different places for another wheel, but still no luck.
When I returned to my bike and crate I found Ariel waiting for me. Perry had gone to look for me so I road her bike to find him. 10 minutes later I decided to go back to my bike and Ariel. Perry had returned and we decided to get a Hotel for the night. This is the first night in a Hotel and at this point I was happy to rest figure out a plan.
The next day we all tried to Hitchhike to Oaxaca city. That didn?t work so well so we got cheap bus tickets so we could stay together, cover some distance and hopefully find a wheel. The Bus ride was crazy. Bumpier than any bike ride because the shocks were obviosely not working. The tires were all bald and there were about 9 people in a vehicle the size of a VW bus. I couldn?t help but laugh while we were passing other trucks and vans around blind mountainouse curves on a 2 lane highway. I can?t imagine a more exciting form of entertainment. A game of Chicken on the side of a mountain. I then realized that I was fine with dying that way in those moutains.
When arriving in Oaxaca city I saw a vegetarian restaurant and looked for the closest address. When the bus stopped, we found a nearby hotel and food. The search for food was great, as there were so many bars and when we found what we thought to be a restaurant, a drunk hooker approached Perry and was trying to get him to hire her. The funniest part was that it seemed that Perry had no clue what the lady was saying or wanting or anything. She left after about 10 minutes and they finished their beer. We then filled up on random junk food from different venders until we found a tostada vendor. While we were eating I spotted an anarchist and talked to him briefly. After I was finished eating I asked him if he was familiar with the IWW. He was wearing a shirt calling for unity against police. He told me about some shows but I didn?t expect to be in Oaxaca that long. We walked to the hotel and Perry and I got a bottle of wine. We sat in the lobby of the Hotel watching 80s pop videos and some of a new sci-fi space movie with Eric, the hotel clerk. After a second bottle of wine Eric asked if we would pick up some beer and gives us some money. Perry go?s to pick it up and brings a 40 oz. for him and a 40oz. for us, followed by another 40oz. It was quite a fun night.
The next day we went to a bike shop and baught a pair of italian made double walled rims for my bike. It cost 360 pesos for the pair. 36 bucks for a new pair of double walled aluminum wheels.We tried to get them to lower the price because 1 rim was slightly damaged from shipping or usage but they didn?t look new. They wouldn?t budge on the price but we got the labor for pretty cheap. I also replaced the front derailer with a shimano for 35 pesos. It really seemed to roll nicely and with less effort and the front derailer is nice for gaining speed downhills. So now it has red bar tape, and red rims to match on a blue metalic frame and fork.
