Playa Chachalacas
Since Ariel and Austin both got seperate flight to Mexico City on the 3rd of March, I decided that I would take the time to go to a beach. Christian and Eric, two guys from Minnesota that know Gina who will be traveling with me later, decided to go to the beach too. The day before we left, I sat down with a map, google earth, and the desire to 'Vamos a la playa' and found a place called Playa Chachalacas.
We headed out on Tuesday the 26th by bus from the northern bus terminal in Mexico City to Veracruz. It was a long bus ride with shitty movies (regardless of the language). But I had my book and I got in a bit of sleep. Once in Veracruz, I found out how to get to Chachalacas. So we got seats on a bus to Cardel, then a cheap taxi to Chachalacas. We had about an hour to wait in Vercruz, so we went and got some food from a restaurant near the bus terminal.
In Veracruz, Cardel, and finally in Chachalacas we were amazed by how windy it was. So instead of trying to sleep on the beach durring a big storm, we found ourselves a hotel room (about $20 for the 3 of us). The wind was howling all night long while we sat in the relative shelter of the hotel restaurant drinking beer.
The next morning things were a bit quieter. I didn't want to stay in a hotel any longer, so I went out for a morning walk. On the way, some construction workers called me over and invited me to share a joint with them (I later arranged to buy some grass for the week from them). Then when I got to the end of the road where the beach peninsula was, 4 army pickups full of soldures came rolling by, so I turned around and went back to the hotel.
Back at the hotel, Eric and Christian had just woken up and I learned that Christian wasn't feel so well. So we ended up spending most of the day at the hotel seeing what would happen. Eric kept reading the symptoms of the diseases listed in his Lonely Planet book and decided that Christian had Typhoid fevor. Since the hotel we were staying at wasn't the most comfortable, we decided to find another hotel so Christian could relax better with the possibility that both Eric and Christian would go search for a doctor in Veracruz on Thursday.
While Christian lay sleeping at the hotel, Eric and I went for a walk to the gigantic 40 foot sand dunes to the north of the village. I wish I had more time to go explore this area, and maybe rent a dune buggy for an hour. But I never got around to it.
So, the next morning (Thursday) came and Christian started feeling better. I quickly attributed it to the only thing we are differently in the last couple days, he had eggs while we were waiting for the second bus in Veracruz. But he was still dehydrated from all the puking and hershey squirts. So we spent the nice calm beautiful sunny day in nearby Cardel getting him some pills of some kind while I spent some time at an internet cafe. Then we all went in search of a post office (which nobody in the city seemed to know where it was), me so I could send some postcards, and Eric and Christian so they could ship back some stuff they didn't need in Mexico (like leather jackets). We never found the post office.
So, it was evening when we got back to Chachalacas. We headed to the beach peninsula and set up camp there, but started worrying about how high the tide would get and packed up to go somewhere else instead. Eric had second thoughts about camping and got a hotel room for himself while Christian and I found a nice place on the beach for the night, had some grocery store dinner, and woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico.
Now finally we had a whole day to spend on the beach, it wasn't too windy, the waves were great, and we all walked away a few hours later looking a bit tomatoish. We went to a local restaurant and had a bunch of nice cold beer and Eric talked to one of the beachside restaurants about camping the night on their property (I would have a place there to tie up my hammock). Well, it went find enough until the mosquitoes came, then the rain falling through the thatched roof. I didn't sleep at all that night.
The next morning (Saturday) Eric and Christian left to go to Oxaca and take a spanish course. I, being so completely tired, sun burnt, and not feeling so well (I swallowed a huge amount of sea water accidentally and it made me sick during the night as well) found a hotel room for the night. I slept through most of the morning, went swimming in the afternoon, read my book all day, and at night watched fuzzy and staticky tv (a real good boxing match which went to 12 rounds with a split decision, how cool, they were both bloody messes, heheheheh, those idiots). There was also a big party that night in Cardel (just a few km away) but I didn't want to go alone and I wasn't really interested in just wandering around a carnival for a few hours talking to nobody. On any other day I probably would have gone, but I just wasn't up to it on Saturday.
On Sunday morning I caught a $1 taxi ride back to Cardel, walked to the highway entrance and managed to hitchhike back to Mexico City in far less time than it took to ride the bus to Veracruz back on Tuesday. It took me just 3 lifts and I waited no more than 45 minutes the whole day on the side of the road. I entered Mexico City at 4pm and 30 minutes later (of nonstop driving into the city) finally arrived at the most easterly subway station (did I ever say Mexico City is really huge?). 20 minutes after I was back at Ivan's house and was welcomed in with a beer, pizza, and a couple of Ivan's friends to talk with.
I really liked Chachalacas. It's truely a Mexican beach town. Almost nobody knew english and probably everyone that came was from Cardel or Veracruz. Of course the prices were higher than in other places, but not as high as I would expect places like Cancuun to be. I also got the chance to learn a bit more Spanish (I have a lot more to learn, that's for sure) and I found a sand dollar on the beach one morning. I don't know if I'll have the chance to get back to Chachalacas any time soon, but I think it would be a lot of fun.
