My last few months in Europe
When I last wrote about my travels I was going to Berlin. Well, I ended up getting a room there and living there from the middle of October to the middle of February. During this time I also went on a few short trips. Since this is going to cover a four month period of time, then I will basically have to summarize a lot.
So, I came back to Berlin at the beginning of October and went directly to the Scherer8, a house project in Wedding, Berlin where some of my friends were living. The last time that I was there was during the new year celebrating with Christoph, Steffi, Martin, Jerome, Goeran, and others. At that time they thought that they were going to loose their house and that the project would fail. But now they have a contract to get the place, which is really great news.
I stayed for a few days before going for a short visit to Poznan. Steffi had just moved there for a semester studying abroad with the Erasmus program. She was living with Basta and Molly, two people that we've both known for a couple years. The whole time in Poznan was a great big party. I met up with some other people I know from Poznan and met some new people too. Then we decided to try to hitchhike back to Berlin via a new route that we hadn't tried before. We were standing there for hours and never got a lift. So we headed back to the train station and took the train to Berlin. The next morning Steffi went to Freiburg to bring some more of her stuff to Poznan and I unofficially moved into the Scherer8.
When I first moved into the Scherer8, it took some time to get to know how the place worked. The house has something like enough place for 40 people to live and 25 or so of them are members of the project. I was accepted into the project in a very interesting way. Normally you have to go to a meeting to even get to live there, but I was accepted without ever even going to a meeting and even became part of the project. There is a public kitchen where we often had group meals including a regular weekly voku (volkskuchen or people's kitchen) and Sunday brunch. There is also an art gallery/bar where we would have concerts, art exhibits, a weekly biological beer bar, and we had kicker (foosball). There is also a workshop with washing machines, tools, spare parts for everything, and more. The entire house and all the public spaces are completely self organized.
We have also done some amazing things with the apartments in the house. Many of the walls between apartments are non-structural. So we took them down to make bigger apartments. In the apartment that I was living we broke down walls connecting 3 apartments, freeing two of the kitchens, one for a bedroom for Kristina and the other we turned into a living room with a sink. I ended up living in the smallest room in the house (formally the maid's room), which suited me just fine since I don't have much stuff. I got myself a single mattress which almost completely filled the room leaving a little space on the side for my stuff, a candle, a glass of water, and a 3 foot hallway from the door to the bed. But overall the room was great. It had the heating pipes for the rest of the apartment running through it so I got enough heat that way and I had the rest of the apartment and the house to use however I wanted to.
After living there for about 2 weeks, I went with Falk to Leipzig to the house warming party of Hippie Phil. After the party we went to Poland together. First we went to Wroclaw, showing up just a little too late for the concert going on that night, but not too late to have a few beers before going to sleep. We spent a few days there walking around the city. We happened to be there for the day of the dead which is Nov 1. It's a very important holiday for the Polish and the cemetary was filled with people. We went to go check it out and wandered around there for a few hours. It was also really nice to see what they have done with the place. A lot of new construction and they were installing central heating while we were there. Then we were off to Poznan to visit Steffi and Clemens. Steffi had just moved out from Basta's to her own room in a dorm. We slept at her place the first night then the rest at Basta's. Again we partied a lot and explored the city a bit. Steffi and said that it made living in Poznan feel more like being on vacation. We all had a really great time.
So, back to Berlin for a few days to the Scherer8 before going with Falk to his parent's house in Kloeden, a small village between Berlin and Leipzig. Here we helped his parents do some work around the house including planting over 100 flower bulbs in the garden (after having to rip out a totally invasive and strong vining plant that had overgrown the plot his mom wanted changed).
Again I spent about a week at the Scherer8 before going with Falk again on a road trip to Rostock to visit our friend Brit and her two three-year-old daughters. We had a really great time there as well including a day walking along the sea in Warnemuende. The girls were a lot of fun. Always ready to play games and quick to learn english. We went to the winter market together, walked with them to Kindergarten, and I became the popcorn man making popcorn for them almost daily.
I was planning on hitchhiking from Rostock to Cologne to visit Marco and Nora, but I ended up just going to Berlin again for a night before heading off again to Cologne. I saw a few people from the house during the few hours I was there. I think they found it funny that I was coming and going more than I was staying, but Cologne ended up being my last trip for quite a while.
It was also really great to visit Nora and Marco. They said they were going to come to Berlin for new years, but they didn't. It's too bad, because I would really like to show them the place where I was living. I spent almost the whole time I was in Cologne at their house expect for one night where Nora and I went to a phychadellic rock party in the city. From Cologne, I was going to go to Freiburg to visit some people. I spent the whole day trying to get a lift in the rain and ended going back to Nora and Marco's place really ill. So the next day I just decided to scrap going to Freiburg and took a ride share to Berlin and back to my new home instead.
So, back at the Scherer8. I ended up staying for a bit more than a month without leaving the city. During this time I really got to know the people in the house better. We had a lot of parties in the gallery and over new years we did some construction in the gallery building a new bar. I also starting going to another project house which was a squat called the Kiga (a former Kindergarten and some apartments which were squatted in the same building). Falk, Jens, Salvo, and a few other people I know are living there. But it looks like they are going to loose their house in May. It's such a shame because it's really quite a beautiful place.
About a year and a half ago I left my touring bicycle with a guy from Copenhagen. I decided that it was finally time to go get my bike back and start fixing it for my trip to Mexico. So, I took a 5 euro train ride to the ferry in Rostock, then a 5 euro ferry to Denmark. From there I hitchhiked to Copenhagen. It all went pretty quickly but I made a terrible mistake. I was in such a rush, talking on the phone to Lasse (the guy with my bike) while talking to the driver, and trying to catch the subway into the city I ended up forgetting my backpack in the back of the last hichhike's car. So, I lost my backpack. When I got to Lasse's, I was not in the mood to hang around. I spent a day walking around the center of Copenhagen, then the next day took a bus with my bike back to Berlin.
Luckily I gave the guy I was hitchhiking information about the Scherer8 and he contacted the house. So I made a one day hitchhike/ferry ride to his place in Nakskov and back making it back around 3 in the morning. It was actually quite amazing that I got my bag back, was able to do the hitchhike all in one day, and all for under 20 euros. It was also really nice to see Brian again. He was really nice while getting the lift from him and it was cool to meet up with him again. I got to also meet his girlfriend and her daughter. It's funny how things work sometimes. I would like to have had more time to get to know him better, but I was on my way to Mexico and didn't know when I would be able to get back to Nakskov again. Next time I'm in Europe, I hope to go visit them again.
The rest of my time in Berlin was interrupted my a quite short ride to Poznan. Steffi had moved back to Freiburg and was going to Poznan for a night with a car to pick up the last of her stuff. Her and Clemens offered to pick me up on the way and to bring me back the next day. Well, how could I say no? I got a chance to visit some friends in Poznan again and most importantly to hang out with Steffi again before going to Mexico. I also brought back 3 bottles of vodka, two of them we drank at the Scherer8 almost immediately.
I really love the Scherer8. I haven't said much about the people who live there. That's mostly because I don't know where to start. All of them are wonderful in different ways. Some of them I got to know better than others. But each and every one of them knows that I appreciate every second that we've spent together. I really don't know where to begin to describe the community that I was welcomed into and called my home. They have, weather they know it or not, made me very happy. It was really hard leaving but I know I will be back (hopefully to a bigger room next time). If any of you at the Scherer8 read this, don't forget to take Martin 4 out for a squeak every few days!
The last weekend in Berlin was without sleep. Friday night there was a party at the Kiga where I saw so many friends from all over Germany. Then at about 3am I went back to the Scherer8 to catch the tail end of a 5 punk band party. Then Saturday brought another party to the Scherer8, this time it was Balkan Beats. I danced the whole night with my friends. I ended up closing the bar at about 7am. After that I spent my time with a wonderful woman talking until brunch started at 2pm Sunday. I didn't get more than 5 hours of sleep before jumping on the plane to Mexico (I can't sleep on airplanes).
So now here I am in the third largest city in the world, half of the world away from what I now like to call home, waiting for my friends from the US to come in about a week so we can go on a bike ride together to South America. Here's to the future!
