Obala, Croatia
I left the vineyard with three german friends to hitchhike to Zagreb and then to the coast in Croatia. I'd been looking forward to swimming in the sea for weeks and asked a lot of the people who came to the party at the vineyard if they wanted to go. It ended up being me, Anja, Sam, and Boernie on our way to Obala.
The start of these travels were a lot harder than I expected. First of all both Anja and Sam were a little ill, with Anja getting iller. We made it to the hitchhike spot in Nagykanizsa and started on our way. It didn't take long before we made it to the border (me with Sam) and then we got our next ride into Croatia about 20km from the border. Then we got an SMS from Anja and Boernie that Sam was carying her passport and the we had to hitch back to the border again. By the time we got there it was already getting late and Anja was feeling worse.
We discussed what to do next. Anja didn't want to try to find a place to sleep outside since I only had a tent big enough for two. She also didn't want to continue hitchhiking. So we all ended up sleeping under the protection of the entrance of an abandoned motel with trucks driving by all through the night. When I woke up, I was surprised to see that we had one more person staying with us. An american guy who was also hitchhiking to Zagreb and that Boernie met while I was sleeping.
Well, the next day we headed out again to Zagreb. We all arrived there quite quickly and met up at the main square. Our friend Maja came and joined us and sat with us in the park while we waited for Ivan to come (we were going to stay at his place). Anja was feeling worse and worse and he wouldn't come until the evening. But anyhow we had a nice time sitting there and doing nothing.
When we finally left to go to Ivan's, we all helped cary Anja's stuff. But somewhere on the way Boernie lost some of her stuff. The night was getting on my nervs and I just wanted to split and get to the coast.
Well, the next morning we all headed out, this time me with Boernie and Sam with Anja. We all agreed to just go wherever the random rides to the coast would bring us. Anja and Sam ended up going to Krk. Boernie and I ended up going to a place north from Zadar called Baric Draga, a small village which has 6 people durring the winter. We decided to jump out there because it was the first village we came to which had a market (which makes it easier to buy food because you can always walk the 5 minutes from where you are sleeping and get more, much nicer than hitchhiking 5km just for more bread and then oops, forgot the cheese).
Baric Draga was a nice little place with plenty of places to swim and just relax in the sun. In fact I got a bit too much direct sunlight, but nothing bad. The water was just the perfect temperature and the sea was calm.
I just spent most of my time swimming or reading. Boernie left a bunch of his stuff behind and went on a trip to Zadar for a few hours and didn't come back until late the next day. I guess he found a nice party somewhere. A couple days later he left to go south and I decided to stay a night or two more alone where I alredy was.
But my plans were destroyed by the pigs. For some reason there is a stupid law which nobody follows where you have to register with the police when you are in any region of Croatia. It's rarely enforced and seems like the kind of thing that only asshole cops would enforce. Well, they got me. I ended up having to pay a fine and if I wanted to go before a judge then they said I would end up having to pay even more just for the translator and then the fine would probably also increase. It was total bullshit. So I paid and I let them know that it was my food money for the next two weeks. I walked out of town, caught a lift, and headed north up the coast to Krk.
On the way to Krk I got an SMS from Sophie and Thomas who were at the vineyard party. They were also on Krk so I went to meet them there. They had a small kitchen in their car and they knew of a nice quiet area away from the city where we could sleep outside. The weather was great and I was with some really amazing people.
When I left the vineyard, I told Dan that I was going to the coast but didn't know where. He didn't have any plans. Boy was I surprised when I saw him, Tyler, and a girl I didn't yet know named Margo walking along the shore while I was swimming. I yelled to him to go away jokingly and the six of us spent the next two days on the coast together.
Then it was time for us to go back. Sophie and Thom decided to go with us back to the vineyard (they forgot something when they left and decided to take it back). In the car was Thom, Sophie, Dan, me, and a girl we met the night before called Daria or something like that (she was going to ride with Sophie and Thom back to Austria). When we got to the border, they decided to search the car (assholes). Sophie's passport was expired so she couldn't enter Hungary. So Dan and I decided to go on ahead and meet them later as they could just go on the next boder entrance and try again. It was just three quick rides and we were at vineyard. Sophie and Thom showed up a couple hours later, no problem. Then it was time to party on the vineyard again!!!
Overall it was a nice trip to Croatia. Obala is the Croatian word for coast (hence the name of the story). It was full of unexpected surprises and changes, especially the shit with the pigs, meeting Dan in the middle of nowhere without planning it, meeting Tyler's wonderful girlfriend Margo (a million hugs for her), and a few other random people we all met while on the coast. I got a lot of sun, I had salt engrained into everything I owned, and hitchhiked with some really cool people. It's too bad I didn't get to stay in Zagreb for long or get to see Maja very much. She's one cool cookie and I know we'll meet again.
