Dennis and Julia?s Wedding
So, I was in Riga when I got an email from Dennis reminding me that him and Julia were going to be getting married on 7/7/2007. Well, I had totally forgotten honestly and was really happy to get the email. I wasn?t planning on going to Germany but for this I changed my course.
It took me three days to hichhike to Freiburg (actually Tiengen which is next to Freiburg). The first day brought me from Vilnius to Warsaw. It took me a while on my last ride to decide if I would go into the city or not. I could also have been left off on the far side of the city and would have been albe to hitchhike through the night and get a lot farther, but if I went into Warsaw I would be able to go visit Dangaroo. Well, I think I chose right and met up with him about a 2 minute walk from the bar where he was. It wasn?t a very long night (it was a Wednesday and the bars were closing early. But it was definately a good time while we were together. He also gave me directions to get out of Warsaw the next day in the direction of Poznan and Berlin.
So the next day I got as far as about 10km from the German border. The last car I was riding with was going to be continuing the next day to England and I was free to continue with them the next day. And so I did. After Berlin they ended up taking a wrong turn and started heading south. I didn?t notice right away and quickly calculated a new route for them which would take them home fine and actually brought be quite a lot closer to my destination at the same time. They were a really cool couple and I hope I can meet up with them again some time either in London or in Poland. So, they left me off near Giessen and really five minutes later I caught a lift which brought me directly to Tiengen a full day before the wedding.
So, Dennis and Julia were going to get married. The actual party started the night before the wedding with the three of us playing with their kids, Mia and Runa, preparing a few things for the party, and then relaxing for the next big day.
I didn?t go to the actual wedding. It was a quick 5 minutes in the courthouse to sign the papers then everyone came over the park where I was waiting with the tables, food, and everything.
The party had the required drama from parents on both sides. Probably the best example was when Julia and I went away from the party for a little while to smoke and relax after she had finally after a few hours of constantly holding either one of her kids but them to sleep and had some time to relax. While we were away from the party the parents got really upset that she wasn?t spending time with them and decided to leave. She just wanted to have a break from the party for 30 minutes. Crazy parents, eh?
The rest of the day was a lot of fun. Playing with the kids, throwing frisbee, eating, drinking, smoking, plaing music, talking to new people, etc.
Anyhow, me and Julia?s brother spent a lot of the day collecting firewood for the night. By the time fire was build (but not yet burning) the wood was 1.5 meters high with about three times as much wood sitting on the side for later. When we finally lit the fire Julia?s grandmother was there ready for it. I didn?t really understand her when she was saying schoen warm (which means very hot). I thought she wanted it hotter, so I piled more on. We had flames going about 3 meters high at the highest. The first went on like this for a really long time. Ya gotta love a big fire sometimes.
All the friends of Dennis and Julia who came were really cool. Paddle was probably the one I talked to the most. That night, maybe around 3am, we headed home to finsih the party. Early the next morning the parents came to pick up the kids for a week while Dennis and Julia took Dennis? father?s VW bus to the Netherlands for their honeymoon. While on their way they dropped me off at the tram to Freiburg where I would stay for one night.
I went to Steffi?s place, but she was at work. Her friend Resi who I met last September was there visiting her too. We ended up spending the day talking and eating a bit then in the eveing we went to Menu?s place for a party. That is were I met up with Laura again. Laura and I had plans to leave the next day to go to Liszo together. We?d been talking about it for quite a while and finally she had the time off work which worked perfectly as I happened to be in Freiburg at the same time.
So the next day we too a ride share to Munich where we stayed at SOMA house. The next morning we ended up taking two trains and a bus which brought us to Liszo, but that?s the next story.
I am really happy I could be there for Dennis and Julia?s wedding. It really made me happy and I could see their smiles clearly for days later. But it?s unfortunate that I only had a short time in Freiburg and I only got to see Steffi for a couple hours.
