Vilnius for Domas?s Birthday
I came to Vilnius from Riga by hitchhiking thinking that I would only stay for a few short days, but like usual situations always change. I had no idea that I would be staying as long as I did for Domas?s birthday, but it was worth it.
So, the hichhike went fine. I arrived in the early evening and my last ride brought me to a 15 minute walk from Jone and Domas? home. But not the same place they lived before but an apartment around the corner. So I stood waiting at Naktida for them to come get me. A couple minutes later and Domas came and brought me to his new flat. It?s a really strange place with a magic wand building door which beeps, a key which is cylindrical and also makes the door beep, and a bathroom with a heated tile floor (kinda nice).
The first night we basically spent talking. Jone and Domas are currently living together but they have both found new partners. In fact Domas is about to move to Ireland to be with his girlfriend. I guess I?m going to have to go to Dublin sometime in the next few months. Jone?s new boyfriend was there the first night but unfortunately we didn?t get much time to talk. Hopefully next time he will be in town longer (he lives in Moscow). Also Domas would be spending most of the next few days working as an usher of sorts for some kind of international meeting regarding some economical somegiggything, so he was going to be busier than normal.
But the first night Domas and I went off to visit some friends of his. I hadn?t met them before and now I can?t remember their names, but it was really nice to get to know them a bit. They also ended up coming to Domas? birthday party.
The next day I had plans to meet up with with Junteeeeee (yes, she has a lot of e?s). But first I headed out to go buy a new jacket, hitting all the second hand stores around. I couldn?t find anything then I went to the army surplus store and found exaclty what I wanted. It?s a military rain jacket which, like all other clothes in the world, is too short in the arms. But once I got it I went to meet Justeeeeee at Bix bar at about 6pm for a few beers (actually a lot of beer). While there, another Juste (not so many e?s, from swing dancing in Sweden) came and joined us.
I was to meet Domas at midnight and by the time I left Bix I was already a bit drunk. So, back to Domas? place to leave some things there and a short walk to Play Club (the local bar) to meet all the people that I have met there over the past two years. It was nice to see them all. Unfortunately Play Club is on summer hours and are only open one night a week now so I only had one chance to go there. Also since it?s only open once every week they have a foosball tourneyment on that day (I didn?t get a chance to play).
So, like I said I was planning on staying for just a couple days at first but then Domas told me his birthday was coming up. Also, I was going to meet up with Alex to catch a lift on his way from Riga to Plzen, Czech Republic but his plans also changed and he had to go earlier than he originally planned. So it worked out anyhow. I was to stay until the birthday, recover for a day, then head out to germany the next day giving me 3 days to go from Vilnius to Freiburg.
But the rest of my time until the party was spent meeting up again with other people I know from Vilnius. I met up with yet another Juste (a third Juste and strangly enough most of the people I know there don?t even know one Juste). Well, I know this Juste from last year?s midsummer festival in Latvia where she was leading and teaching traditional Lithuanian folk dancing. We met up at the city hall and went for a short walk to her place where we had some tea and she played me a song the she had recently written. Then we went to meet up with Domas, ate some dinner, and we watched a film (40 year old virgin, very funny). Unfortunately Juste had to head home and couldn?t stay to watch Hair.
I also found out from Justeeeee that Rutele was going to be in town. I hadn?t seen her for ages. She?s been off living in Maastrict, NL going to University there. We met up at While Elephant (a vegetarian restaurant) and talked for quite a while, catching up with eachother. It was kinda crazy there. Usually the service is bad, but this time it was terrible. Took 20 minutes just to order a tea. I didn?t really care but Rutele was getting really angry and I was just laughing about it.
On another day I met up with Justeeeee and we were waiting for the third Juste when two guys started talking to me. I didn?t understand and asked them to speak in english, which they did. They told me that the patch on my backpack is bad. It?s an anti-nazi patch. They ended up telling me that they were nazis and I ended up argueing with them for quite a long time. They were telling me that the Catholic Youth are the only ones who are suitable to run Lithuania. Also they were telling me how much they hate gypsies, gay people, black people, jews, etc... I tried my best to present the case of tolerence to people regardless of their race, religion, and sexual oreintation, but of course they wouldn?t listen. Juste showed up while we were talking and both her and Justeeeee helped back me up with the tolerance thing. I don?t know, it was strange for sure. When they left we went to the local cinema?s bar for their last day before closing for the summer. After hanging around and talking for a while Justeeeee went home and Juste and I went for a midnight walk around the city, along the river, then up into Uzipus and back to her place where I left her and headed back to Domas? place.
The birthday party was really nice. What could I do but show up with a bunch of beer and beer snacks. I have no idea what time we went to sleep but it was clearly morning by then. It was just a few friends at his place.
The next day I met up with Mindas and we went over to SMC and talked for a while. Things are going good for him. He?s learning a lot about computers and it?s really cool to see how much more he learned since the last time we talked. Cool stuff. Also at SMC we happened to meet up with Rutele again and we all sat and talked together.
Well, I was hoping I would leave the day after the party but I knew it wouldn?t work out like that. Leaving the day after staying up all night is hard. So when I finally left (the next day) I was waiting for the bus to go to the hitchhiking spot when another guy came up to me and asked if I was hitchhiking. He told me of another bus that we could catch to bring us a bit closer to the hitchhike spot so we went together. It did?t take long to catch a ride together. He wanted to go to Kleipeda which passed Kaunas. The first car was going to Kleipeda and let me off in Kaunas so I could continue going south from there. A couple hours later I was in Poland trying to get as far as possible in the rain to Germany, but that?s for the next story.
So, Vilnius was fun and it was nice to catch up with everybody again. One thing that was strange was that Jone wasn?t very social. I tried a few times to talk with her but it was nothing but dead ends. I hope next time it?ll be differnt and we?ll connect again. And like I said, I?ve got to go off to Dublin some time, I?m sure it?ll be a lot of fun!
