Midsummer Festival (Ligo) 2007
This year's midsummer festival took place at Chris's farm on the northern border of Latvia. He just recenlt got the farm and I got the invitation a long time ago. I had been looking forward to going to Ligo for the third time for quite a while now. So I left Hungary and started hitchhiking to Latvia on Tuesday for a party that starts Friday and really takes off on Saturday.
The hitchhike went far better than I expected. From google maps it estimated something like 22 hours of driving to get there, which I estimated at a lot longer to hitchhike. So I gave myself 4 days to get there, 3 if I was lucky. I somehow managed to get there in 36 hours. I hardly ever had to wait long and managed to get a lot of long distance hauls with truck trivers.
I arrived at just about the right time too. I happened to arrive just a few hours before Chris headed to his farm to start setting up for the party and I came with to help. The next couple days consisted of wacking some weeds, collecting wood, building a fire pit in some old stone ruins on his property, building an outhouse, cooking, and drinking beer. I also spent a lot of time playing with Helena, Inga's 5 year old daughter. She quickly learned important enlish words such as "Lets go play ball", "kick the ball", "throw the ball", "Lets go swing" (meaning the tree swing I set up for her), and more.
The neighbor gave us two liters of fresh milk from their cows and in return I offered him a bit of Palinka, which he really enjoyed.
When Friday finally rolled around there were already about 25 of us. I think I went to sleep some time around 5am, but I'm not too sure about that.
The next day was the official day of the party. Thing were great. More people came, to about 40 total. We had a great big fire which I kept as large as I possibly could bringing the flames up to about 4 meters high, drank a lot of beer, and weathered the few tiny showers so common to Latvia durring the summer and almost garunteed durring the Ligo festival. We had music, beer, drums, guitar, more beer, great food, and some more beer.
A friend of mine happened to have a bit to smoke so we shared a spliff in the middle of the day, durring the hight of the direct sunlight and opressive head. It was absolutely amazing in the nature with butterflies landing on us and talking complete nonsense to eachother.
The food durring the festival was really great. We had some really good pasta dishes, pancakes, salads, and those who ate meat had plenty of the stuff.
But best of all for the festival was seeing people I hadn't seen for a while, many for at least a year if not more.
After the festival was over, I got a lift back to Riga and I stayed with Alex and his girlfriend Lasha. I arrived in the evening so ended up just staying at Alex's place leaving once to go get food at about 2am. But the next day I was a bit sick. I went to Alex and Lasha into the city for a while but didn't feel that well. Many of our friends were meeting at the old town hostel, so I went to join them but didn't last past 10pm when I headed back to Alex's place to sleep, and sleep I did for at least 10 hours (I ususaly sleep about 5 hours or 6 at the most). Now today I'm feeling a lot better and I'm looking forward to going to the hostel again to meet my friends and hopefully feel good enough to drink a beer or two with them.
Next I'm going to go to Vilnius to visit everyone I can for however many days I will be there. After that????
