June in Liszo
I came to Liszo to find that you almost couldn't find the grapes through all the weed. Well, not really, but there was a hell of a lot of work to be done. I didn't have much time, so I ended up working as much as I could for the few days I had.
The hitchhike to Hungary from Munich didn't really work as planned. I didn't make it all the way to Liszo but instead to Lenti. After a few hours of trying to get a lift for the last 60 or so kilometers, I decided to go find a place to sleep. I walked down the road heading out of town until I came to a forest. About a 5 minute walk along the trail and I found myslef a nice little corner of soft dead leaves to sleep on. In the morning I got a lift directly to Nagykanizsa. I was going to just jump on the first bus to Liszo to get started on what I assumed would be a lot of work, but on the way I was spotted by the boss of one of the neighbors, Loyosh. I'd been to his house a few times and met his wife and kids. Well, he insisted on me coming to his place for lunch. But first we had ourselves a Langos and a beer.
At Loyosh's house he offered me a bath. Then his wife cooked up some delicious food. But after a while I started insisting that I start heading to the vineyard so I could get to work. Loyosh insisted that he had to wait a few hours before driving becuase he had some beer, even though it had already been a few hours. So, I was kinda trapped. I was having fun, but I was worried about the work that needed to be done.
So we all went on a bicycle ride to his son's and his son's girlfriend's new house for a little while. Then back to his place stopping for ice cream on the way. They also gave me some homemade jam and fresh steaming bread to bring back to the vineyard. We stopped off a Agi's house on the way to get the keys and they brought me to the farm. I took them on a tour (only Loyosh had seen it before) and offered them as many raspberries, currents, and cherries that they could take with them. We also had a bit of the wine, which was still doing pretty good.
By the time they left it was already late in the afternoon. I was just getting settled when I decided that I should go visit the neighbors. Well, that in itself is a drinking expedition. Needless to say, I didn't get any work done durring the first day.
The next couple of days consisted mostly of weed wacking (until I ran out of fuel), pulling weed from the hardly surviving garden, and cutting grass until the pull string of the lawnmower broke yet again and was unfixable.
On the second morning I would headed into Nagykanisza to get more fuel, a new pull rope, and some food, which I had too little of. Also, I was inticed to go to the city to meet Ildiko, a friend of Laci's. She does massage therapy and Laci was trying to set us up. So, I met up with Laci later, with a backpack full of food, and went to her house to pay a visit. She was nice enough and wanted to come to the vineyard on my last day, Monday. I couldn't say no.
So the next couple of days I spent doing as much work as possible, all the time knowing that there was no way I could finish it all. I had quite a few visitors durring this time as well. Agi came up with her son and daughter to pick berries, Zolton came by for a short visit (which was a huge highlight, it's always great to see him), and when Ildiko came she came with a friend, Edika.
When Ildiko and Edika were there, we ate together (I cooked lunch), had a bit of wine, and picked a bunch of berries and cherries. Then while the girls were sunbathing, I went to do a bit of work. After a while they offered to help, so I showed them how to tie up the vines. When that was done, Edika decided to go on her own and start pruning the grapes COMPLETELY WRONG. I never showed her how and didn't ask her to do it. Now I can only hope that the grapes won't get fucked by what she did.
Well, as evening came on my last day, the girls went to Laci's house for dinner and I stayed behind to do some more work. Agi and the kids were just done picking berries so I gave over the weed wacker for them to bring to their house and I bussied myself with trying to get as much finished with the farm so I could leave early the next morning. Then I was off to Laci's house to see the girls one more time before they went home. On the way I met up with Janu and I told him I was leaving the next day to go to the midsummer festival in Latvia. So he gave me a 500ml bottle of his best palinka to bring with. Then at Laci's we all talked for a bit until the girls went home.
By then time was runing out. I headed to Agi's house to take a shower and then headed back home to finish putting everything away and cleaning before I left. It was nearly midnight by the time I was finally finished packing and in bed. I had to wake up a 6 the next morning to meet Laci at the bar and to catch a lift to the hitchhiking spot heading towards Budapest.
So, not everything was finished, but I won't be gone so long this time so it won't, I hope, be so bad when I come back next time. Also next time I will probably be there for a bit longer, so the work can be more spread out. I also have to start preparing for the party we a having in August. Everyone is welcome to come. Just bring a tent and send me an email to let me know you are coming.
Well, things are going pretty good. I'm still having fun and also looking forward to going back to Hungary.
