The G8 Summit
My first week back in Germany has been full of all sorts of fun. Coming back to Munich, going to the G8 Summit, visiting friends in Braunschweig, and back again to Munich.
I got to the airport a lot later than I had planned. As I was walking to the check-in, a little girl ran right in front on me and by luck I managed to avoid crushing her with the added weight of my backpack as I fell hard to the ground. Then it was on to security, which took forever. That caused me to be the last person to board the plane as it was waiting for me (but only for a few minutes). I didn't cause the plane to leave late. Maybe next time.
So, the plane trip was just as I expected, hellish. I hate planes. But it was really cool when the stewardess gave me two cans of beer to drink with my somehow decent airplane food and the already in effect space cookies I ate just before entering the airport. I also had an entire row all for myself. Nice!
The wait at Hethrow was dismal, then the flight to Munich was just as fun. When I arrived I had to answer a lot of questions about my trip to germany. Then when I finally got to the baggage carrosel, my backpack wasn't there. It was still in London. So, they delivered it to my friend's house a few hours later.
The next morning Sam, Anja, and I went together to the hitchhiking place to go to the G8 Summit. We got seperated quite early (it's hard to hitchhike as three and I am used to going alone anyway). Not too long after we split up, I got a surprise call from Jonas in Berlin asking me what I was doing. It's funny because the last time I was hitchhiking in the direction of Berlin, he called me out of the blue too. It was still early and I'm quite sure I could have gotten to the summit that day, but he said he wanted to go to the summit too, so I went to Berlin instead so we could go together.
That evening Jonas, Josi, and I spent the evening talking on the balcony, eating some food, drinking some wine, and I taught Josi a little Lindy Hop. Unfortunately Josi had to work the next day so she wouldn't be able to come with us to the G8, so we thought. It turned out that Josi's dad wanted to borrow the bus for two hours which turned into something like eight hours. By then Josi was back from work and she came with us. Right on the way out of Berlin we filled the last two seats of the bus with hitchhikers who were also going to the G8. And then later durring a piss break we ran into Sam and Anja who were still on the way (they ended up spending the night in Berlin too, I had no idea).
The road up to the G8 was really strange. We had the road all to ourselves and in the opposite direction was a really long caravan of police cars presumably going to pick up more cops for the demonstration.
When we arrived, we first went to camp Reddelich, but there was no more space to park the bus, so we made the right decision and went to camp Wichmannsdorf. The moment we arrived, the demonstrators were also just arriving. We were going so slow that I hopped on top of the bus and surfed the rest of the way to the camp. we also took on a few passengers on the open side door and riding on the bumper. Once the car was parked, we headed into the camp to look around. It didn't take long to find the clown barrio where our friend Falk was staying. The Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army was having the end of the day meeting, so we sat outside the meeting tent by the fire and had some beer waiting for Falk. Falk arranged a tent for me to sleep in and Jonas and Josi slept in their bus.
I didn't have any of the training for the clown army, so I asked how I could help. Falk suggested that I bring water to the clowns while they were doing their action. I thought that was a great idea, so the next morning I got up early with the clowns, grabbed the bike I was borrowing from Jonas and Josi, filled my backpack with water and apples, and met with all of them at the edge of the forrest. As a group we all marched through the forrest (me carrying a lot of water and a bike on my shoulder) for a few hours trying to secretly arrive as close as possible to the west gate without being spotted by police. We were quite successful. When we finally arrived on the road, there were no police waiting for us.
We marched right up to a field about 600 meters from the west gate before we were surrounded by the police. Once that happened someone yelled scatter and we all ran into a nearby huge field which was far too large for the police to surround us again. I managed to get out of the field with my bike and proceded to take the few empty water bottles I had to get them filled at a nearby house. I ended up making the run back and forth a few more times and also acted as a liason between the clowns and the police. I think it helped that I was talking to them in english and insisting that the clowns be allowed to drink some water.
The last time I arrived, I asked if I could bring in the water and I was told no. So I went and asked another cop, and he also said no. So I went to go wait on the sidelines. That's when I noticed that a baloon was sitting in the ditch by the side of the road next to the last cop. I asked him if I could grab it because I didn't want it to become pollution. When I did that, one of the first cops came storming at me and yelling at me because he already told me I couldn't bring in the water. When I told him I just wanted the baloon, and the cop at the end of the line confirmed what I said, the mean cop just stomped away like an angry child.
While I was on the sidelines, the clowns decided that they wanted to get out of the field. So they lined up in formation and marched toward the cops with a while flag waving. They negotiated to leave the road which was blocking the west gate. The clowns wanted to be able to leave peacefully and to be able to walk on the left side of the road. The police said no to the left side because it blocks traffic (duh, that was the point). So, the clowns again demanded the left side and to have permission for every clown to hold hands in pairs. Again, no to the left side. So the clowns gathered and agreed to leave on the right side. When the speaker for the clowns went to shake hands with the cop, the clown took back his hand, stuck his thumb on his nose, and wiggled his fingers, all in front of the television cameras. When they were on the road, they turned around change sides on the road and proceeded to march backwards (then they would be on the right side of the road from their perspective).
Shortly after, for some reason, all the cops left. So the clowns just simply headed back to where they came from and proceeded direclty to the gate before being stopped. They managed to mantian the blockade for a few hours. I ended up joining Falk and a few others who were seperated from the rest of the clowns. They managed to climb a small construction hill really close to the fence. The hill was maybe 4 meters high and 8 meters by 5 meters at the base with steep sides. The police didn't know what to do with us. One of them came up to try to negotiate with us. He was really friendly and was quick with our humor. He surely wanted us to leave immediately, but we didn't. There were also reporters around, so they kept their cool. They told us we had to be 200 meters from the fence, so with clown logic the clowns decided to go measure 200 meters, always making mistakes and having to start over.
Finally after a while we joined up with the other clowns back a bit from where we came from. We were still blockaiding the road to the gate and cars couldn't easily get through which caused many delegates not to be able to arrive. After a few hours they came with a panser tank and the clowns laid down on the road only to be dragged off one by one be the police. But once pulled off the road, the clowns would just get back on at the back of the group. I think it took about 30 minutes for the tank to go 50 meters. What a success!
Eventually the police forced everyone to stand in a group off to the side of the road and formed a circle around us. We had to sit there and wait and wait. Some thought we would all be arrested or at least have our ID's checked. After a while we finally were ordered to march for about 1.5 hours for quite a few kilometers with cops walking on both sides of us. We were singing songs and having fun the whole way. My favorite thing to do was to ask the cops if they knew how to twirl their batons. My other favorite question was to ask them what they wanted to do when they grow up. That one really surprised them. heh.
So, after the walk there were people waiting to take everyone back to camp. I had the bike, so I rode. While I was going back I took a wrong turn and when I turned around I found a long stream of police vehicles storming down the road. Five tanks, some water cannons, and many other vehicles. Woah.
When I finally got to camp I was exhausted. Luckily dinner was ready. I think I stayed awake until about 2am before finally going to sleep.
The next day I was really quite lazy. Falk was also not up to doing much and since someone had gifted me a nice piece of hash, Falk and I went into the forest and got a bit stoned. We also had a bit of beer. It was a nice sunny day, we were stoned, drinking beer, laying in the sun, and doing yoga for almost the whole day. I kinda wished I had gone to participate in more of the demonstrations, but I just wasn't really up for it.
In the evening I hitchhiked to the Reddelich camp to meet up with Conrad. I hadn't seen him since last August at the Woodstock festival in Poland. I joined the people at his camp, including his girlfriend Nora, and stayed up until the sun came out drinking beer and wine and sitting around a fire.
I didn't sleep much, but that was ok since the next day i hitchhiked out of the camp and headed to Braunschweig to meet up with Aint and Lina. Hitchhiking was really quite easy and I arrived quickly (beside the fact that the first ride took me far out of the way in a stupid route going to G?ttingen. Aint and I headed to the market (while being hungry) to buy some food. We did a bit of speed shopping. That evening I introduced him and Lina to the vegetarian Ruben sandwich (using his sandwich maker and avocado instead of corned beef). Then we spent the rest of the evening with him playing guitar, me playing the bongo drum, and all of us singing.
Lina had to leave early to go to her mother's so Aint and I went out for a midnight stroll. When we passed a hospice house, I noticed that there was a nice looking chair sitting on top of the dumpster. It turned out that there were three chairs and some personal belongings of whoever it was that had died. We got a photo album with a bunch of pics from the 1960's, a back massager, a fake kitten, and we took one of the comphy chairs for his apartment.
The next morning Aint had a job interview. When he got back we decided to go swimming. On the was, while cycling, there was a sudden thunderstorm. We hid out in a dry area of a university. It was so hot out the last few days that the water that fell was instantly steaming off the ground and the water in the puddles were all hot. Not just warm, but hot. Eventually we found a lake to swim in. The top half meter was warm water and below was refreshingly cold. There were also a group of about 20 people rowing a dragon boat together up and down the lake and the last time they came by Aint and I both mooned them. The hoot and hollard and applauded. It was a fun day for all. Then Aint took me to his favorite ice cream place before he had to go to Lina's mother's birthday party. I spent the night at his place and left in the morning.
The hitchhiking to Munich was slow to start. At first i was in a really bad starting place. Then I decided I would try the hitchhike by train method which I haven't done for a really long time. I got to the platform and was running to the door of the train exactly 30 seconds too late to catch the train. Then I had to find another way out of the city. Eventually I got out, got my lifts, and I still managed to make it to Munich before it was too late.
I was planning on spending only one night in Munich, but I'm spending two instead. Tomorrow I will go to Hungary to do whatever work needs to be done on the vineyard.
So, the G8 was really amazing. I had a great time and I feel like I'm really lucky that I spent the first two nights at camp Wichmannsdorf with Jonas, Josi, Falk, and all the others. I'm also really happy that I got to see Aint again. Hopefully I'll see him again in Latvia for the midsummer festival.
Now I know I didn't write anything about my time in the US. I don't really know what to say about my time there. I was there for 3 weeks. In those 3 weeks I feel like I did about 3 months of activities. This will just have to be a hole in my blog and some fantastic memories for myself. I didn't get to do everything that I wanted to do but on the other hand I did a lot more things that I hadn't planned for instead. Wow, it was great. I hope to come back some time in early 2009. Lets hope that we don't get another Bush!
