A Few Days on the Farm
I needed to go to Liszo for a few days to see what work really needed to be done and to see how things were going. It was probably the driest April on record. For 5 weeks there was no rain. It was too hot and dry for spring and I was constantly worried about the new grapes and the veggies I had planted before leaving 3 weeks earlier.
So, I headed out from Munich early in the morning with Niklas. Niklas is from Hamburg but has been staying in Munich recently. And that?s where I know him from. Well, hitchhiking went pretty well. We got stuck for a while in a couple of places, but we got to the Austrian-Hungarian border around midnight. From there I gave a call to my friend Zoltan in Nagykanizsa to let him know I was coming and to see if it would be possible to sleep at his place the first night. Well, he gave me basically 30 minutes to find a ride in his direction then he said he would come and get us (about 120km). It was raining really hard, but we were dry and safe at the border gas station. Well, we didn?t get a lift and then Zoltan came and saved us. It wouldn?t have been so bad and I?m sure we would have found a lift eventually, but it was also nice to see him again.
So, we went back to his place (I hadn?t been there before). It?s out of the city and surrounded by forrest. It?s really a very beautiful place. We ate a bit of food, smoked, drank some Palinka, watched some of a film, then went to sleep. In the morning (actually just a bit before noon) he gave us a lift to Liszo. The keys to the farm were left at the bar and it is closed between 12 and 14, so we waited a while, visited the neighbors, then went and got the keys. We had a beer while we were there.
The first night we drank some wine and watched a film. The next day it was raining, but we got a bit done. I headed to Agi?s house and washed my clothes. I also talked with Meisi and Feri and Feri showed me pics from his class trip to London. It was late in the evening when I finally got back to the farm. I think Niklas probably played guiter, watched films, and read while I was away. Anyhow, in the evening we went to the village bar, drank a bit of beer, then went to Andros?s farm for more beer and fun.
The next day, early in the morning, Agi came with the weed whipper (which I needed) and some gas (also needed). It was so early in the morning for us, so I just went back to sleep for a while instead. But durring the day, which was bright and sunny, we got all the gas and weeds cut and visited a few neighbors and had some wine. It wasn?t even 6pm before we were both back to sleep (me on the grass laying in the sun). That night I started cutting branches off of a half dead tree. One of the branches smacked me on the nose so now I have an ugly scab on the bridge of my nose. Oh well. Then that night we burnt all the wood I cut down and had a nice big fire going.
The next day we spent putting up new lines for the grapes to grow on. It was time consuming, especially unraveling the wire so that there would be no knots. But we got this important work done. Also the red wine barrel we getting low so we had to wash a smaller barrel and move the wine. Then we had to wash the old larger barrel. Time consuming easy work.
Zoltan came to visit on the 8th and so we asked him if we could get an early start from his place in the morning rather than taking the bus from Liszo for our trip back to Munich. We went with him to his friend?s place and drank some of his grandfather?s wine (yum). Then we went back to Zoltan?s place and had some food and sleep.
At 5:30 in the morning we woke up and by 7am we were at the hitchhiking place to get back to Munich. By 10am we were at Austrian-Hungarian border and we decided to have a little hitchhike competition back to Munich. Niklas got a car before me, but only by two minutes. I didn?t know where he was, but I knew I was taking a lot longer to cross Austria that I had hoped. It wasn?t until 1:30 in the morning that I arrived in Munich and another 2 hours of walking and night trams before I got to SOMA house. I had some really cool rides durring the day. My favorite might have been from a trucker who picked me up and drove me about a third of my journey. We smoked his hash, talked, listened to good rock music, and were laughing almost the whole time. The entire way I didn?t meet a simgle english speaking person, so I had to rely on my poor german skills durring the whole day. Everyone says that they understand me, but natureally I make lots of mistakes. It?s probably quite entertaining for them to hear me speaking with my american accent. So, when I arrived at SOMA Haus, Niklas hadn?t made it yet. He didn?t arrive until just a few minutes ago (it took him 47 hours from when we parted). He ended up getting stuck in Graz for 23 hours. Ouch.
So, now I?m in Munich just relaxing until I fly tomorrow in the morning to Chicago. I?ll try to post something about my flight as soon as I arrive in Chicago. I?m not looking forward to the flight and the walk from the plane to the Blue Line. Once there, I?ll be really happy to be visiting friends and family. Who knows, maybe the poll will be true and I?ll be in jail. I don?t trust the US government in their judgements. I truely believe that they don?t care if someone is innocent when they lock them away. Does the department of Homeland Security have a file on you?
