Hamburg, Berlin, and Braunschweig
For the second half of my whirlwind trip through Germany, I went to Hamburg, Berlin, and Braunschweig. I decided to go to Hamburg because I wanted to see Haya again as well as all the other people I have met there. Berlin was an easy choice because I have missed the city a lot and there is just something about the place that makes me keep coming back. I also, after missing it the previous two years, managed to be in Berlin for the 1st of May (I?ll explain later). Then after that, I headed to Braunschweig for the sole purpose of visiting Aint and to meet his girlfriend.
The hitchhike from Cologne to Hamburg was actually quite easy. It took a while but eventually I got a lift from my starting point clear beyond all the messy autobahns that stretch from Dortmond to Bonn. Hitchhiking there is really difficult because all the cars are going in so many different directions. But once out of the black hole, it was easy sailing the rest of the way to Hamburg. When I arrived, I only had about a 15 minute walk to meet Felicitas.
I met Felicitas back at the rainbow gathering in the spring of last year in Turkey. Since then she had been traveling around in central Asia and just before I was going to go to Hamburg, she sent me an email to let me know that she was living there. For some reason she throught that I was living in Hamburg. Anyhow, I met her at the Landsbrucke station. From there we took the S-Bahn together for a few stations then she went home and I went off to a dinner party which I was already late for. She didn?t come to the party because she had to wake up early. But we made plans for a few days later when she could sleep in the next day.
So, I continued on to Matthias? house where him and his roommates had made a double batch on vegetarian chilli (one batch spicy). I was also happily surprised when I saw Irina, Matthias? girlfriend. I had no idea she was staying in Hamburg. Of course as soon as she saw me, she pointed at my shirt and asked me what that was. When I looked she bopped my nose while giggling. She always get me. I also brought two bottles of wine which when added to the wine that was already there made for a lot of drinking and smoking. Later Haya came. It was nice to see her again, but we didn?t get around to talking for quite a while. But eventually we did and it was good. She had a really interesting trip in SE Asia. Now she?s trying to figure out where she?ll go for her next 3 month vacation from work in December.
We all slept at Matthias? with me, Haya, and Simon sharing Simon?s room. The next morning really early she left for work. I don?t remember her leaving but she told me that I said goodbye and fell back asleep.
Durring the day, me and Gunar (from Austria) went to go enjoy the sun. We were sitting on a strip of grass next to one of the lakes, juggling, and reading. Later I got a call from Felix and we met him and some friends at Stadtpark. Later Haya came and still later Leila from Freiburg came. We played frisbee, drank some beer, ate food, and just enjoyed the sun. Unfortunately just about an hour before dark I decided I would jump over Felix. I made it, but my bare foot landed on a beer bottle. It didn?t break but really bruised my foot. I totally lost the arch in my foot to swelling which made walking painful for the following three days. I definately couldn?t wear shoes so I went barefoot all over the city and later in Berlin too.
So, for my last day in Hamburg, I just sat and read most of the day trying to ignore the pain in my foot. Later in the evening I went to Felicitas?s house where we talked, drank wine, and caught up on old times. She?s enrolled in art school and she drew a portrait of me. Really cool. Then she did some assignments for school and used me as a subject. She drew different body parts over and over again and at different agles. I think she drew my hand the most.
In the late afternoon the next day I started hitchhiking to Berlin. It didn?t take long and after a while I found myself at Mauler park with Falk, Jonas, Josi, and many others. It was a few hours after dark before we finally decided to go to Jonas and Josi?s place to sleep. The next few days I spent basically with Jonas. We did a lot of nothing and it was great. The sun was shining and the beer was tasting great. One night I went to Falk?s place for a party and we all went to a nearby bridge to watch the sun rise. Another night I went to Weserstr to visit Jan, Timo, and the rest who live there. Kristina was also there and we caught up with eachother a bit. Yet another night I went with Jonas and Josi to listen to her father?s band while playing pool.
On the 30th of April I went with Falk and Kristina to Boxagner Platz in Freidrichschein, Berlin. It was the eve of the 1st of May which was historically been a date for big riots in Berlin especially there and in Kreutzberg. When we arrived at the square we were immediately surrounded by police. But these were riot police. And they were everywhere. But in the square all was good. People were talking, laughing, and having a good time. Every once in a while a troop of these riot police would come marching through the crowd and start pushing people. I was just standing there facing the wrong direction when they came along once and one of the cops smashed into my back. The police were being really agressive the entire night trying to cause a fight. You could see it in how they were behaving. As far as I?m concerned, they were hitting innocent people. I saw young tiny girls getting shoved to the street by them. And when the crowd would get upset at this, the police would come back harder and with more force than before. THE POLICE WERE BEING AGRESSING. But I was talking with some people and we were discussing their tactics. They hadn?t been doing things like this before. We were quite sure that they are training for the G8 summit this year in Germany. I?m afraid that the police are really going to turn evil in June and hurt a lot of innocent people.
So, the next night I met up with Jonas again and we headed to Kreutzburg which is yearly the place for the biggest riots. But there is also a lot of street concerts and we concentrated our time on that. While there I saw some police called the anti-conflict police. They are the onces who are supposed to stop the riot police from attacking (well, that?s what I assume anyhow). Well, I did ask if that was part of their job, and the woman I talked to said yes. Then I basically complained to her about the overly aggressive police from the night before. She understood my complaints and so I asked her if she will tell her cheif and she said yes. Then I asked what would happen if a lot of people complained to her, and she said it would change nothing. Nice, eh? The police are agressive and no passive methods are available to stop them from being more and more agressive. What can we do?
Well, the concerts were good... mostly. The beer was not cheap, but cheaper than you will find at any other festival. So, it was a nice night.
So, after a really crazy time in Berlin, I headed to Braunschweig to visit Aint. I know him from Cologne, but he recently moved to Braunschweig. And the first day I was there was his first day in a new flat. We went exploring the area near his house and found the closest supermarket. We made a great big dinner together with salsa, musrooms and garlic friend in butter, potatos, and more. But most of all we talked and talked a lot that night. It is always great to see him. Really uplifting. And I think it was just about the happiest I?d seen him in quite a while.
Early the next morning I got a lift to the hitchhiking spot and started my way down to Munich where I spent one night before going on to Liszo, Hungary to work on the vineyard. Niklas from the SOMA Haus in Munich came with me.
So, my short trip in Germany, basically visiting friends I hadn?t seen in a long time, was quickly over. This might have been one of the hardest trips I?d had in Germany. Usually I like to stay for a bit longer everywhere I go. It?s hard to be on the road hitchhiking for more hours than you get to spend with people you know. Next time I hope to take it easier and I?ll probably go visit the people I missed this time around.
Peace,
Perry
