Munich, Freiburg, and Cologne
After a bit over a month in Liszo, I decided that I needed a vacation (hah) and had an overwhelming desire to visit my friends in Germany. I started the trip by going to Munich (visiting SOMA haus) then to Freiburg (visiting Steffi, Leila, Manu, Dennis, etc) and after that to Cologne (visiting Marco, Anikin, Sonja, Gerde, Nicole, etc). This is just the first half of my whirlwind trip trough Germany which will also take me to Hamburg, Berlin, Braunschwieg (maybe), and back to Munich.
I was able to arrange a ride from Nagykanizsa to Vienna trough a friend of a friend. We started around 4:45 in the morning which brought me to Vienna really early. Unfortunately I was dropped off on the east side of Vienna and had to go east. After a few hours standing on the same spot hoping for a lift, which never came, I decided to walk into the city. I ended up taking a train from Vienna to Munich.
I wasn?t looking forward to the train ride even though it?s the most comfortable mode of transportation, but it?s also quite anti-social. Sitting in a small cabin with up to 5 other people and not saying a word the whole time is not my idea of fun. I brought 3 liters of beer with me and somehow ended up talking with this guy Max on the train the whole time. We shared the beer and what little food I had (which was enough for both of us).
When I finally arrived in Munich, I headed straight to the SOMA house. Only one person in the house knew I was coming so it was a big surprise for all. It also happened to be someone?s birthday that night so there was plenty of beer to go around. since I was there the last time, there have been a few changes. They have build an outdoor living room (it?s great) and changed a few other things in the house.
A few hours after I arrived, the other guests staying at the house arrived. Three american girls (two from Mississippi and one from Arizona). It was interesting to talk to them and especially to hear that sweet southern accent from the girls from Mississippi. We all hit it off pretty well, which is strange for me since I hardly talk to americans. One of the girls, Allison, and I got on famously and spent a lot of time talking and argueing who?s song titled Allison is better, Elvis Costello?s or The Pixies?. I think it?s the Elvis Costello because the lyrics are amazing, but I do agree that other version rocks! Allison and I ended up staying awake almost all the night. She ended up leaving early in the morning with the other two girls to go sight seeing. I stayed at SOMA and slept almost the whole day. That evening the Mississippi girls headed off to Amsterdam for a few days before heading back to the states.
But that evening the house got another visitor. Emil from (I think) Denmark came. He?d been at the house before and was on his way to Spain and stopped by to see if anyone wanted to join him on his journey. Leanna decided to go with him, so the next day the tree of us headed into the city so she could buy a sleeping bag. While we were at the train station, two undercover police men approached us, showed us their ID?s, and started to search us. When I asked them why they were searching us, they said that they were searching travelers. Well, what other kind of people do you expect to find at a train station. And they were only looking for drugs. I must say I was quite offended when they said that they don?t search people in ties. Profiling SUCKS!
But after that, all else went well that day. In the evening we went around the city to different supermarket dumpsters and found tonnes and tonnes of fresh veggies and fruit along with a dumpster totally full with still frozen packages of veg and fruit, still in the cases of 10 or 12 in a box. Why they threw all the stuff away, I haven?t got a clue.
The following morninig I headed off to Freiburg, hitchhiking. I was waiting at the hitchhiking point and again the police came. This time they only checked my ID (no drug search this time) and wished me luck with my hitchhiking. Then 10 minutes later yet another police car came and did the same. This is one thing that I?ve been warned about in Bavaria. THERE ARE TOO MANY POLICE.
So, I ended up catching a lift with a convertable from Munich to Stuttgart, another short ride, then one that took me all the way to the center of Freiburg. From there I walked to Steffi?s place, but she wasn?t home. I ended up spending a few hours with her dormmate Saphire, talking, thinking, setting up and sitting in her new tree swing, and basically relaxing. When Steffi finally arrived it was with her new boyfriend Clemens. The three of us ended up spending the evening eating pizza, drinking beer, and playing table soccer. Somehow we managed to stumble home and raided the fridge before going to sleep.
My only day in Freiburg left me with lots and lots of time to wander around. I went to a little shop in the city which sells wooden toys and I picked up a small puzzle (about 3inches by 3inches) which takes about an hour for one person to put together. it?s probably the coolest puzzle I?ve ever had. Then I spent the rest of the day laying in the sun next to the river and reading my book.
That evening some friends were having a double birthday party at their flat. I called up Dennis (a cool guy I met up with while hitchhiking late last year) and invited him to come. We met in the city and went for Pizza, eating it on the grass next to the river. Then we headed to the party and met up with everyone. Steffi and Clemens came later. IIIIit was a lot of fun, a lot of beer, good music, and fun people. I picked up a birthday card for Manu. I thought that it was his and Martha?s birthday, so I wrote both their names of the card, but I was wrong, it was Manu and Swen?s birthdays. Oops. Stupid mistake.
Later in the evening a couple more people arrived. One of them is Laura. She?s really shy about speaking in english and would only talk to me in english when we were whispering to eachother. It was quite silly. But we did end up talking quite a lot in German about gardening (her profession) and my vineyard. It was fun talking to her, but at one point she said that she thought that I was lazy. So, I invited her to the vineyard to have a competition to see who is more lazy. Who knows when she?ll come, but it?ll be a fun competition. Maybe one day of really hard work to see who is lazy then the next day just lying around and doing nothing to see who can be the laziest.
I couldn?t stay as long as I wanted to at the party because I was to head to Cologne the next day and wanted to start my day as early as possible. The hitchhike to Cologne was actually pretty good. For the largest part of the journey I was riding in a Porche, which is always cool!
When I got to Cologne, I was dropped off only a 15 minute walk from Marco?s place. I headed there and greeted everyone and Marco and I spent a lot of time catching up on things. That evening I headed into the city to meet up with Nichole for her boyfriend?s gallery opening party. I tried to get Marco to come, but he didn?t. Oh well. It was interesting, but some of the people there I had a really hard time finding something to talk about with. One guy kept asking me if there were monuments in Chicago for the different famous mobsters from the 30?s and wouldn?t take ?I don?t know? as an answer. Then he spent the better part of an hour trying to explain the plot of some 1940?s spaghetti western movie he likes. Yawn. But it was nice to see Nicole and Fabian (her boyfriend). Next time I go visit Cologne, I hope to see Nicole and Fabian (and Fae, Nicole?s girl) somewhere outside of a party.
When I came back to Marco?s place that evening it was perhaps 2am. Marco was still awake (I knew he would be) and we ended up talking a stoned conversation until who know?s when. I think the birds must have been singing already when I went to sleep. It was cool (and always is) talking with Marco, but if I had gone to sleep early enough, I could have gotten up and gone to Dusseldorf (60km away) to meet up with some other friends for breakfast. But I was too dammed tired, so I didn?t go. I?ll catch up with them next time, I?m sure.
My second day in Cologne was spent relaxing in the sun, sleeping in the sun, reading, and relaxing some more. I don?t think Marco woke up until 5pm. The evening turned into a replay of the previous night all over again. Loads of fun.
On my last day in Cologne, I headed into nearby Potz to use the internet and to buy a bit of food. While I was there, I got a message from Deborah (a friend of Marco?s, Nora?s, etc) inviting me to join them swimming. We went to the nearby manmade lake which had some really cold water. After swimming for like 20 minutes, we just laid in the sun. Boy, haven?t I been active the last few days. Relaxing, relaxing, and more relaxing. It wears you out!
For dinner, I invited Marco to go for Pizza and a beer. Then we headed back to his place. By the time we got back Sonja and Anikin were already sleeping. We were both hoping to spent the evening talking with them. For some reason Sonja refuses to talk to me in english even though she understands everything that I say. So I end up talking to her in German, which is hard for me because of my limited vocabulary. Anyhow, again Marco and I had our long and late into the night talk about nothing.
The next day I joined Marco and Aniking for a morning coffee and then I headed off to the hitchhike spot to go to Hamburg where I am right now.
But there is one more thing I want to talk about before I end this. I?m really upset. I recently received a package from my parents sent to me in Hungary. I got it a few days before I headed to Germany. What really upsets me is that my package was opened and read by the US government. After they read my mail, they put a sticker over the cut they made in my envelope which said that it was inspected by the US Department of Homeland Security. When I was a child growing up durring the early Regan years, I was always told about how the soviets would read the people?s mail and that those types of things would never happen in America. Well, guess what. The US government is reading my mail. I?m not happy.
