A Month in Liszo
A lot of people have been asking me about the vineyard in Hungary and what I?ve been doing there, what I will be doing there, and blah blah blah. Well, here is a bit about what I did for March and April of this year.
I took an early flight from England to Bratislava and it was still early morning when I arrived and started hitchhiking to Liszo. I got most of the way there pretty quickly when I made a stupid mistake. One of the drivers was able to take me half way between two bigger cities, but it left me on a really small road with very little traffic. So I ended up spending a lot of time there waiting and waiting and eventually gave up and walked back to the main road and went on the bussier but more round about way. I still had plenty of time to arrive, but unfortunately I had a bit more trouble. After the next big city, the road that I wanted to take had been blocked by the police. I didn?t know how I was going to be able to go any further so I just ended up taking the train for the last little bit. When I finally got to Liszo it was dark, the pub was closed, but I had some wood I could burn and my first night back was really quite uneventual.
The next day I made the required trip to the village pub. It was nice to be back.
So, there were a few problems when I arrived. I wasn?t the last person to leave, so whoever left last did a few things wrong. There was shit in the outhouse bucket that had been sitting there for months. Yuck! I had to empty that out right away. Also, there was a pot of leftover food sitting out the whole time. That wasn?t much of a problem except the wooden spoon sitting in the pot was completely covered with mold. That went directly into the fire pit. Other than that there were a few minor things like eggs which have been sitting in the kitchen for months. Chucked them, literally, into the vineyard (good compost). Also there were some jars which had jams in them but were virtually empty and were also left to mold over. I managed to clean those.
So, the work that I had to do on the farm was pretty straight forward. The other people who have vineyards showed me how to do the work, which is pretty easy but time consuming. I had to trim the vines which took all of two minutes to learn how to do but a few days to do it. Then I had to hoe all the soil which I did with a power rotary hoe as close as I could to the grapes themselves as I could. That, on the ohter hand, is actually pretty hard work. This machine, if it hits a bit of underground wood, will jump and if you aren?t holding on tight it could hurt someone or kill a vine. I didn?t get hurt.
Dan?s vineyard has a lot or empty places where grapes should be growing. Laci showed me how to take the clipping from the old vines and plant them in the ground. I ended up planting a bit over 300 new vines and if they all survive then we will have a lot more wine to drink! Yeah!
Now, there was another big work project which I took on. At the bottom of the vineyard there is a section of grapes which haven?t been properly attended to for a few years. The weeds there were head high and there was no way of knowing where the grapes vines where or how many there were. For two days I cut out sapling trees, weeds, grass, ivy, and other ferrel plants from this section and now they should grow nice and healty this year.
I also decided that what we really needed was a nice big veggie garden. My friend Laci has a tractor and he plowed a nice big section of unused field near the house. A few days later he came back with a finer blade and chopped up the soil real nice and fine. After that I went over it with the rotary hoe. Finally I raked off all the big chunks which will still sitting on top and started planting all sorts of veg. I think I most excited about the eggplant, asparagus, and sugar snap peas. I?ve also got carrots, radishes, onions, garlic, pattipan squash, cucumber, spinache, lettuce, tomatoes (I can never remember how to spell that right after Dan Quale fucked it up and I just can?t remember which way is right, funny eh?), peppers, couliflower, corn and a few more that I?m probably forgetting.
I also learned how to prune the fruit trees and stuff like that. I also ended up with a lot of clipping from the trees, vines, and so on which I had to burn, which was a lot of fun but made you stink really bad.
I didn?t work every day because there was quite a bit of rainy weather at first. I ended up spending a lot of time reading and watching films. Some nights it was cold, but it was no problem because I have a nice hot oven in the house. But on nice days I tried my best to get a lot done. I had no idea I was doing good or not at my work, but then a few days before I left one of the neirhbors said that the farm looked better than it had for years. How cool, eh?
Another thing is that I?m vegetarian. Many peopel don?t believe that I am able to stay alive with that kind of diet. It must really blow their minds that I got all that work done. It also took a lot of convincing to invite a few of them over for a vegetarian lunch, but they all said the food was good. But still, every time I?m off visitng one of the neighbors they stick a piece of meat infront of my face and ask me to eat it. It?s getting a bit old.
So, I?ve been improving my Hungarian a bit. It?s fucking hard to learn, but I think on 10 or 20 years I?ll be able to have a conversation. Who knows. Now I know how to ask for a beer at the bar, to tell someone to fuck off, and other basic things like that. I?m sure if I put the effort into it I would have a lot bigger vocabulary, but I just didn?t want to. I would usually just read or watch a film. I also ended up going to the bar a few times but not many people speak anglish and if they do, it?s limited. So I just end up smiling and drink my beer.
Now, here is the story of my vineyard that you all probably want to know. Last November I made a deal with a guy to buy his vineyard for 280,000 forint. I asked him if he wanted the money then, and he said he wanted to wait until spring since his wine was sitting in the celler and he didn?t want to move it until then. So, no problem. When I arrived I went daily to the ATM?s and took out the maximum that I could so that I could have the money on hand to pay him. When I finally met up with him he said there was a new price of 380,000 forint. He raised the price by 100,000 or 35%. This is a man already not very well though of on the hill and now surely it?s worse. I heard people talking about it for a few weeks after I found out. I basically told him that his handshake is no good and that I don?t want his vineyard anymore. But that?s just fine because I came to work both on that vineyard and on Dan?s. Dan is the aussie friend who owns two vineyards already and where I helped harvest the wine last fall. There is more than enough work to do. So, I?ll just stick to the two for now. Dan?s currently in Australia working a saving money and will be back in Hungayr in early August. So, right now I don?t actually own a vineyard. But that doesn?t really matter because the two that Dan has is good for both of us. No problem.
I wasn?t totally alone in Liszo. Aside from the locals that are on the hill regularly, there are a few other people in the area that I know. Zoltan from Nagykanisza came over a few times and thankfully he let me borrow some DVD?s. I can?t thank him enough for that. Plus there are a few people in the village I?ve gotten to know including two sisters Evi and Sara. Evi speaks really good english and Sara is starting to learn. Sara is a bit shy so it?s hard to get her to talk, but she?s really interesting no the less. There are also the local kids in the village. They know a few words in english and german, and I know a few in Hungarian, but we do get our ideas across to eachother too. We end up playing frisbee or kicking around a soccer ball. There is also a girl in the village called Yildi (not sure about the spelling). She speaks perfect german but no english. We end up talking quite a bit whan we meet eachother on the bus or wherever. Then there is Meisi and Ferry who are the sons of Dan?s cousin or uncle or something. I end up going to their house sometimes to get water, take a shower, or use the internet. Meisi has come up to the vineyard a couple times too. There is also a local girl named Vicki who speaks pretty good english and her boyfriend is a good friend of Meisi?s as well.
Laci also has a friend, Frank, who is from Hungary but has been living in Vienna for the last 20 years so we can talk to eachother in German. He?s a really nice guy and it?s always nice to see him when he?s in town. Also there is Solti and Bogi, a couple who actually live on the hill (the village is in a valley). They are the only ones I know of who live up there year round. I?ve gone over to their place a few times and it?s always fun. Most of the time we end up laughing about our inability to communicate. Bogi is just starting to learn english so I think I?ll be helping her learn and I?ll be learning a lot from her too.
But overall I think the person I?ve talked to most with is Kristian. He works every day at a computer store in Nagykanisza and I would frequently get a lift from him so I could go to the market or run some errands in town. His computer shop had moved to a new location and he said that if I wanted to build a computer our of the leftover parts laying around, that I could. It took the better part of a day but at the end I ended up with a Celeron 900Mhz PC with two 10Gig disks, 390Meg ram, two DVD-rw drives, monitor, mouse, and keyboard. He also downloaded the DVD distribution of Debian so that I could install linux. But now he?s gotten a job in Budapest and will be moving there in May. I?ll miss him, but he said he?ll be in Liszo on the weekends. I hope so.
The weather at the beginning was nice. Warm durring the day and a bit cold at night. Then there was a really rainy and cold spell where I got no work done and hardly did anything. On the 20th of March there was a really beautiful snowfall whith hand sized clumps of snow falling. I took a few pics (coming soon) and the next day it was all melted. But then the last two weeks I was there was really dry. Too dry. All my saved rainwater was almost all gone by the time I left. I had to start using the neighbors extra rainwater to water the garden (it?s not the cleanest of water) and save the rest that I had for washing dishes and bathing.
There was also not so much wood, so I went to the bar and told Loyosh (spelling?) and he arranged for a big wood delivery for me. It took me a whole day to cary all the wood and stack it up nicely. Unfortunately the wood is not that dry so I will have to spit it all and keep it in the sun because right now it doesn?t really burn that well. But he also doesn?t want me to pay anything for it but instead to come help him work in the forest a day or two (his job is cutting wood).
On my birthday it was cold and rainy. I spent most of it at my place but I also went to Meisi and Ferry?s house to have a nice not shower (my birthday present to myself). I slso stopped by the bar and bought a round of beer and told them on the way out that it was my birthday. Then I went home, put on a move, smoked a spliff, and went to sleep.
On the 11th of April Dan?s sister Carmen came to Lisyo. She?s there now working on the farm. I tried to get as much work done as possible before she came and I hope there?s not too much for her to do. Most importantly is to water the garden and to hoe the grapes by hand. When I went to the train station to pick her up, there was someone with her. She just met him a few minutes before we arrived. He?s from New Zealand and his name is Dan. We all ended up going back to the farm and the next day we all worked a whole lot and finished a lot of work. Then for the next two days, since they where my last, we did a minimal amount of work and ended up drinking a lot of wine and visiting the neighbors.
My last day at the vineyard the boss (Loyosh) of my neighbor came by. He?s got a son in the city who speaks really good english and he invited us to come for dinner the next night. He also took me on a sightseeing trip around the area to take a few pictures. Also, a friend of mine who I met in Poland but is Hungarian came to visit. Her name is Edit. Well, Camen, Dan, Edit, and I all went to Loyosh?s house for a HUGE lunch. We were all so overstuffed that we could hardly move. Him and his whole family are really great and we had a nice time there. Edit and I also spent the night at his place because we were both heading off early the next morning, she to he home and me to Munich.
So, I don?t really know what else to say about the place. I?m sure I could write and write about it but nobody would care about it. If you have any question, ask them here in the comments section and I will answer them.
