Surprise Visit to England
So, when I left Madeira to go to England I had only a one day notice. So, I decided to try to just show up and knock on the door of the 491 Gallery where I?d stayed in Octover and November 2004 and last year in June. I didn?t know what to expect, who might be living there, if anyone was still living there that I even knew, and tonnes of other unkowns.
So, I arrived at the airport. I was really surprised when they gave me a 6 month visitor visa without even asking, how cool. From there I jumped on the tube and headed off to Leytonstone. It was really strange all over again, cars driving the wrong direction, people everywhere speaking english (and a few in german too) so that I could understand conversations going on around me (not used to that either). I struck up a conversation with the girl crammed next to me on the train and we talked for a while. It was nice to speak with someone with a british accent again, and good practice before I saw my friends so that I could get back up so speed with my failing and faltering english skills (I think that if I didn?t read, I wouldn?t be able to have a decent conversation anymore).
Well, I arrived at the 491 Gallery and knocked on the door. The first thing I heard was Jack, the dog, barking behind the door. A few seconds later Screw opens the door and I think he literally said ?Oh my word, it?s you! How long are you staying? and so I was back home again in the gallery. There actually hadn?t been many changes with the people staying there. They had finished a lot of remodeling in the second building (the new roof had just been finished last June). Now Tim?s room, which I helped build a wall for last time was finished. So was Steve?s room which was supposed to be a second band practice room but I think it?s better as a bedroom anyhow.
Slowly over the next few hours I saw all the others living at the gallery. Hugs all around and an update about what?s been going on from both me and them. Big news all around, but I think the biggest is that the record label that they were just starting last June is going well, LUdO has finished a new album (go buy one and help support a really good band. Click here for homepage and here to buy their album). The CD?s arrived on the second or third day I was there and was the first person to buy one. Also, I found out that they were going to have a CD release party, so I decided right then that I would have to stay in the UK unil the 9th of March and go. How could I not?
Most of my time spent there was with the people at the squat. But on the second night I got invited to a party at JP?s. We met in Greece and again in his hometown of Royal Tumbridge Wells last summer. It was nice to see him again and I?m happy to announce that he?s as chipper as always. I also went to spend an evening at his place the night before I went to Liverpool (more on that later) which was fun as well.
So, since I was in the UK, I knew I couldn?t go without visiting my first friend from my travels, Gemma, in Liverpool. She knew I was coming but to visit a few days before I came. It had a really good time catching up with her, Matt, and their friends. Also, on the night I arrived there was a gallery opening which was associated with some people from the 491 gallery in London, so I went to that. It also happened to be the night of the full lunar eclipse and miraculessly there were clear skies that night in Liverpool. I didn?t watch all the phases but stuck my head outside a few times to see the different colors and saw it whie it was in full eclipse. That evening I spent the night at the artist hostle (non-public) set up near the gallery opening. Steve Gent was staying there but he was already asleep when I arrived. Again we had a really good time catching up and I finally met his fiancee Holly. They have a nice old and big house which they were given and are renovating.
Also, while I was in Liverpool, Gemma and I went to Fact to watch ?Science of Sleep? and to go for lunch at The Egg (vegan cafe) with Steve and Holly. Although I was only there for three nights, I feel like I got a lot done and did a lot of the things I wanted to do. Unfortunate I didn?t find the time to head to the new localtion of The Kiff, but I?m not entirely sure they would remember me there as I only went there for a couple parties back in September 2004.
So, back in London I met up with a Latvian friend of mine, Dana. I met her at work and we walked to her home and I met her roommates. She had just come back from a visit home and had a bottle of Riga Balasm and some of the delicious garlic roasted black bread (wow!!!! WOW!!!). I think right now she?s somewhere on her way to Asia with another friend of mine, Robby (from Sicily, helped pick grapes at the vineyard last year).
The CD release party was a lot of fun. I met up with a few more people I hadn?t seen for a long time and Steve came down from Liverpool. The music was great but the beer was expensive and I didn?t have much cash for drinking. There was also a really big turnout. Many of the bands that played that night are people from the 491 Gallery as well. It?s a night to remember.
I got home around morning and slept most of the day (so did everyone else). That evening I took a bus to the airport and flew off to Bratislava in the early morning.
I have to give some extra special thanks again to everyone at the 491 gallery. Sy, Tim, Skaggy, Steve, Screw, Marco, Cliff, Lockwood, Robin, and all the other people who were coming and going while I was there. I had a great time there and I look forward to seeing you all again expecially in Hungary sometime.
