Back in Berlin for Silvester (New Year)
I hitchhiked back to Berlin with Kristina and spent a few days there seeing some friends and celebrating the New Year with them too. It was really great to see them all again, and to play Risk almost every day until I left to go to...
Well, while on the way back to Berlin I gave Robby a call. I used to live in the same house as he did when I was living in Urbana and he was in Berlin for a month visiting his girlfriend. I gave him a call and he came to meet up with me at Kristina?s house. Kristina was tired so she stayed home while Robby and I headed out to try to find a bar to have a few drinks.
At first I took him along Rigaer Str knowing a few bars on the street but I couldn?t find them. So, as we were walking we ran into a few strangers (two germans and two turks) and started talking to them to find a place to go for a beer. We all went to a bright and overpriced bar not far from Kristna?s. We had ourselves a couple of beers and talked for quite a while. At the table next to us there was a group of friends playing a cool game so I went and introduced myself to them and ended up playing with them for a short while. It was really quite fun and cool. Too bad I don?t remember the name of the game.
When the bar started to close, Robby and I set out on a little walk counting bicycles and ended up at another bar and talked until something like 5:30 in the morning, starting a trend of not going to sleep until something around 5am every day for the next few days. It was really nice to catch up with Robby on what?s going on in Urbana, Harvest House, and just other random crap.
Durring the next couple of days I spent them all mostly visiting people. Jonas and Josi for a party at their place, where I spent the night argueing with a friend of Josi?s about anything that came to mind (we were almost invariably polar opposites, but she never once said the single word which will get me started on a rant and arguement which I surely cannot lose, the word is ?normal?). I also met up with Christoph when he came back from his parent?s place and for two nights in a row played Risk until we couldn?t think anymore. I acutally caused two games to end. One of them was by destroying green which gave Christoph the win (his mission was to kill green) and the other was when I completed my mission which was to destroy black (which was Christoph). Loads of fun and I?m sure you a glad that I told you all about it.
New Years eve was always up in the air. Nobody really had an idea what they wanted to do and nobody would commit to doing anything. So, when the 31st finally came, a bunch of people from Christoph?s building, Steffi (who arrived that evening, Robby, Kristina, Axl, Ralf, and more went to one of the empty flats and we all drank beer and vodka. Then just before midnight we all went up on the roof where there is a complete view of Berlin right before your eyes. While up there we could see the explosions all over the city from the many private and public fireworks displays. It was really fun. No matter which direction you looked, there were explosions. Also, while up there, we ended up drinking some wine, more beer, and talked for probably an hour.
Once we were all back downstairs, the alcohol which we drank on the roof hit almost everyone like a brick. I don?t know how long it was before I gave up and went to sleep, but it wasn?t long (I think). Sortly after Christoph and Steffi also passed out.
The next morning I was fine, no hangover. I took a walk and found one of the few places open to bring some food home for my sick friends (they ended up staying in bed all day long). I didn?t want to just hang around for my last day in Germany, so I told Christoph and Steffi that I would go check out this jukss thing which was going on a bit outside of Berlin and some people I know from Munich would be there too.
Jukss was really quite nice. As I was walking up to the school where the conference was being held I saw a few of my friends. I ended up spending quite a few hours there catching up, participating in discussions, eating some alright food, and meeting a few new people. Unfortunatly almost everything was in German and I couldn?t really keep up. I could follow almost everything (which I?m proud of) but I?m not fast enough at speaking german yet to participate.
On my way back to Berlin I got a message for Alke. I?d told her that I would be leaving germany the next day and she happened to be in Berlin. So I met up with her instead of going straigt back to Christoph?s. It was really nice to see her again, even if it was just for a beer and walking her home. Somehow I will see her again, but I don?t know when or how. But she?s moving to Berlin now, so it shouldn?t be that difficult.
When I finally got back to Christoph?s, they were ready to go to sleep (we had to wake up early the next morning for our flight). Christoph and I had a good night kiff, talked for a bit, and went to sleep.
The next morning we caught the airplane with no problems at all.
I hope everyone had a really great new year with at least one surprise!
