SOMA (Self Organized Meta Arc) Haus, Munich
I was in Freiburg trying to think of somewhere to go before having to be in K?ln durring christmas. My friend Maja, from Zagreb, told me once that I absolutly needed to go meet some friends she made in Munich, so I thought "Why the hell not?" I?d heard a lot about Munich and Bavaria, and not much of it good. It?s a very religious and conservative part of Europe. I ended up staying for something like 10 days.
When I arrived in Munich, the ride I got left me just two train stations away from where I needed to be. Great. I called up the people at SOMA house when I arrived and a short wait later they came to the platform to meet me. Tim and Sam came to meet me with a big cup of hot Mate Tea for the 5 minute walk home.
I entered the house and right away started to feel at home. The house was inherited by Anja (who would come home from a trip to spain a couple days later) and she decided to make it a free house for anybody. There is painting and writing all over the walls, lots of food (which they get for free), and most importantly, interesting people.
My first night there was a lot like all the rest of the days I was there. Plenty of conversation, mate tea, food, drums, music, sitting around the fireplace, and when needed, time to be alone and read a book.
Durring the 10 days I was at SOMA, I met Chris, Christoph, Sam, Tim, Andy, Anna, Anja, Adrian, March, Monster, Leo, Stella, and Svetleo among others. I spent almost the entire time while I was in Munich with them.
The weather was quite strange, just like all over Europe. There were some cold days, but the strang part were the few days where you could sit outside with a t-shirt on and enjoy the sun?s heat. Not typical weather for mid December in Munich.
On my second night in Munich I joined Stella and Svetleo at the Tollwood for a reggae concert. It was a lot of fun and plenty of dancing. There was also a few little punk kinds (maybe 12 years old) who kept trying to pogo (mosh) into me but would bounce off me like I was a wall. They also were light enough to crown surf which they did often. Cool kids.
I was planning on leaving Munich after a few days and go maybe to Wroclaw, Poland, but the people at the house were organizing a party for the following weekend and they suggested that I stayed. So, why not. The party was really great. Monster?s reggae band (Jeh Child) played, there was a drum circle, a trans music room (not my thing), and plenty of people to talk to. There was also plenty of food, which the people at SOMA dumpster dived (or is it dumpster dove?).
SOMA is really a very unorganized group of people who do amazing things. There is never a shortage of food. They know dumpsters around their area where they can get fresh bread, fruit, veggies, cheese, and even chocolate (none of it bad). One day they went out and brought back pralines. Maybe 200 of them, maybe more. All of them in their original boxes with expiration dates in Feb 2007. The store must have just had too much chocolate and so threw it all away. Baffeling.
They also have a few projects that they are working on. The sell fair trade Yerba Mate tea only so that they make enough money to drink the Mate for themselves for free. Also, they contacted a tobacco company and asked them if they could help promote their product and a few days later 300 10g packages of tobacco arrived, for free.
Since I was in Munich, I decided that for one day I should walk around the city a bit. I arrived in the center and walked around watching the people, buildings, and the christmas market (all pretty boring actually) until the batteries on my ipod died. When the batteries died, I went back to SOMA. There are a lot of old people in Munich. It?s like the Florida of Germany.
So, these rumors about Bavaria that I heard seem to be true. I didn?t experience any problems myself but I was told about some personal experiences from people at SOMA. Just walking down the street (if you aren?t looking like a yuppie) the police will sometimes just check you for whatever, including strip searches looking under your balls and in your ass. Scarry, if you ask me.
A highlight durring my stay at SOMA was when Maja came from Zagreb for a surprise visit. She?d been emailing me earlier in the week saying that she was thinking about coming but then she said she wouldn?t be coming. Then on the day of the big party she walked into the house completely unexpecited. It was really nice to see her again, the magic of her presence is just amazing.
Durring my 10 days I read three book. Burmese Days by Orwell, Timequake by Vonnegut, and Hulk Hogan?s autobiography. The Hulk Hogan book was funny (just a little bit) and complete non-insiteful. But Burmese Days was really interesting. But best of all was Timequake. It blew me out of the water and I know I just need more and more Vonnegut, I?m addicted.
When I left to go to Berlin, I took the train to the nearest station to the hitchhiking spot but I was too late to catch the bus from there to the spot so I had to walk for about an hour trying to hitchhike on the county road all the way (no luck). It wasn?t too cold but a bit windy. From there, hitchhiking to Berlin was a breeze.
I left Munich with much more than what I came with. I came not expecting anything and left knowing that there is one more place (even if it?s as small as a house) where I can go and feel welcome.
