K?ln, D?sseldorf, and Freiburg
After being in Berlin, I spent a bit of time jumping around in K?ln, D?sseldorf, and Freiburg visiting friends. Sorry, I don?t have any pictures. I haven?t taken any since I left Hungary (been quite lazy actually with the pictures). Place read on for whatever it?s worth.
I went back to K?ln from Berlin hitchhiking. When I got to the hitchhiking spot, there was already somebody there trying to catch a lift. But as he wasn?t asking people while they were filling up with gas, I went ahead and stared asking there. It took a while before I got a lift and while I was there a girl showed up who was also hitchhiking. Eventually I got a lift to Michendorf (a great place to hitchhike from) and I arranged for that girl to go with me since she could easily catch a lift from Michendorf in her direction too. She had never been there before although she said she hitchhikes a lot out of Berlin.
Anyhow, when we arrived, I asked the first person I saw and got a lift in less than a minute. It was with a movie director, Dutch, heading to the netherlands in order to vote in the elections that day. It was really nice talking with him and I was getting a really far lift form him when all of a sudden, just past Braunschieg, his back tire blew. We pulled onto the shoulder and I showed him how to change a tire. Unfortuantely the tire had oxidized onto the axis so I couldn?t remore it completely and we had to wait for the ADAC (germany?s AAA) to come. When they arrived, they had a much sturdier jack and could kick the tire free (I was kicking the tire too, but was afraid of the little jack falling out from under the car). Well, after about an hour we were back on the road. He took me most of the way but before he turned off, I was let out at a rest stop.
From there I got a lift from a british guy driving a british car. So I sat there, reading his british news paper on what would normally be the driver?s side of the car (lots of fun and strange looks from people passing you). His route took me to the west side of D?sseldorf and from there I had just about 25km to go to K?ln. No sweat. Got the lift and arrived with plenty of time to make it to my friend?s place.
When I arrived, it was almost like I hadn?t left just a few days before. It?s always great to see Nora, Marco, Aint, and everyone else that lives there. I spent a few days relaxing and talking with everyone. Unfortunatly we never got arround to playing Risk. Bummer! Maybe next time. But anyhow the main reason for going was to visit Nora before she went back to Spain. I would have like to see Alke too, but she left the day I arrived to visit her dad in Oldenburg or something.
I think it was very imortant for me and Nora to spend some time together. She?s always been on my mind whenever I go somewhere beautiful and exciting. I think I can almost feel her presence when I?m in a place like that. I?m really grateful that I?ve met her. We spent a lot of the next few days talking, which was really good for both of us. We talked about Spain, Hungary, family, food, chocolate, and more. Great times. The day she left to go back, we spent the whole evening relaxing in Marco?s room. It was almost like therapy for all of us there. We took turns giving eachother massage, sharing joints, and looking forward to the future, whatever it may be.
It was also really good to be there with Aint, as he was going through some rough times. Aint also has the same kind of effect on me as Nora.
The days I can?t really express well in words but I know that I will remember the feeling that I had while I was there. I just know that when it was time for Nora to go, and she was torn in two (like the rest of us) about going away from K?ln again, we were all there to support her and show her our love. It was a very stong time for all of us.
The next after Nora left I headed up to D?sseldorf to go to a party with some friends from Hospitalityclub that I hadn?t seen since who knows when. For sure some since June, others earlier.
But before going, I headed up to meet with Nicole, who I met while taking the ride share to Berlin the week or so before. She invited me for dinner and to trade some music. I was surprised when I arrived and her mother was there. It was cool talking with her and her mother, but her mother asked the ever soooooo important motherly question `Wie hast du kennen gelernt? or how did you meet. I was quite surprised and I found it really funny. But anyhow, I was there for a few hours before I left.
The train to D?sseldorf was just as exciting as a train ride at 1am can be. Totally uneventful. But when I arrived at the party I was barraged by hugs and familiar faces. It was really nice. On the ride I tried to catch up with the drinking already taking place by drink a few beers on the train. Then once there, we all headed out into the old town so I could have the famous D?sseldorf house schnaps. If you can put fire in a liquor it would not be as hot as this stuff, it was great!
The next few days in D?sseldorf were spent with Sebastian, Karamia, some of Karamia?s friends from Riga, and a swedish guy that I?d met back at midsummer. It was an interesting few days and I felt that I endlessly had do explain to one of the Lativan guys why I was vegetarian (something that I think nobody should have to defend, ever). But it was a good time. It was also interesting to see how often they all took showers (two or three a day, it was baffeling).
The day after they left to go back to Latvia I had Sebastian?s place to myself. I cooked us dinner and we finally got to talk a bit. It?s always nice to spend to time with Wokzilla.
I hitchhiked back to K?ln with a teacher on Computer Science at the University in D?sseldorf (computer graphics, not my field). Then I went to Marco?s place (Aint had already left to go work in Braunschieg at the winter market). We spent a few nice days finally being able to talk together a bit. It was difficult while I was there for the two of us to really talk with everything going on. He told me stories like when he first me Nora and so on. Great!
I decided to take another ride share to go to Freiburg again. Steffi asked me to come for a party, so I did. The ride dropped me a 5 minute walk from her place.
The next few days that I was there was full of partying, seeing people that I?d met the last time I was there, maybe two week earlier, and trying to figure out where Steffi and I would go in January.
Trying to find a place to go was more difficult that you could imagine. First it was Malta, then Tunisia. But we never ended up buying tickets while I was there.
Steffi and I went to a Hospitaliyclub meeting at some overprices yuppie bar for a while. It was OK, but after we ended up also going to the KTS for a vok? (people?s kitchen with 1 euro meals including gluwine), which was a lot more fun.
While I was hitchhiking to K?ln from Freiburg a couple weeks earlier, I met another hitchhiker named Dennis. When I got to Freiburg I contacted him and I went to meet him, his girfriend, and their two kids for an evening. We also spent the night talking, listening to music, and smoking. I look forward to the next time I head out there to visit them.
After all this time in Europe I?ve noticed one thing. I?m always looking forward to going back and visiting the people that I?ve met. It makes things quite difficult sometimes, as they are spread out all over the place. Somtimes it takes me a lot longer that I like to see someone again (for example, Alke) and it hurts to not see them. But then I?m also often quite excited and looking forward to going to the next place. As a result, after Frieburg, I decided to go somewhere new, somewhere I?d been kinda avoiding, somewhere which is called Bavaria (It?s alright if you start screaming in horror). And that is where I am now.
