Back to Germany (Freiburg, K?ln, Berlin)
After being away from Germay since September, and needing somewhere to go, and being invited to Freiburg to visit Steffi, I decided to head there when everything was finished at the vinyard in Hungary. I?d spent a week in Freiburg, a night in K?ln, a few nights in Berlin, and then went back to K?ln again.
It was already getting cold at nights, and I thought to myself that it might be a bit stupid to try to go the direct route to Freiburg through the Alps. If I were to get stuck somewhere, it?d be fucking cold. So I decided to go north to Prague and then west and south to Frieburg thus avoiding any mountains. It?s not such a short distance, and I had no ambitions to make it in one day (which is a 12 hour car ride without breaks). So, in the morning of 9th of November, I started hitchhiking on the country roads (avoiding any big cities which are sometimes hard to hitchhike through) and found my way relativly quickly to Gyor at the entrance to the motorway heading towards Bratislava. I must have been standing there waiting for a ride for like 2 hours (really annoying) when I finally got a lift which took me to Bratislava. In fact he was nice enough to bring me about 20km past Bratislava so I could catch the traffic heading towards Brno and Prague. Unfortunatly he let me out directly on the motorway, in the dark, and my hopes started going does when it started raining that stinging sideways rain that you can?t see. But it didn?t take long until I got a lift on a truck that was going all the way to Prague. Excellent.
When I finally got to Prague, it was about 9 at night. I thought that it might still be possible to find a lift going further, but no luck and I was getting tired. So I decided to go find a place to sleep in the city somewhere. I sent out a few SMS?s to people asking if they knew of anyplace that I could sleep, but nothing came through. While waiting, I picked up a few wonderful Czech beers and wandered through the city for a while. Prague is so full of british, german, and american tourists, that I started to dislike the place from the very beginning. Then, while wandering around, I found a raggae bar and sat down for a couple more beers. I knew that Polish and Czech languages were similar, so I tried ordering a beer in Polish, and it worked! Some people were selling grass at the bar, and smoking it there, but when I asked the price, I was amazed how expensive it was, so I passed on it.
After a while, I decided to head out to try to find a nice quiet park to sleep in, outside of the city. But I didn?t get far before I ran into a group of Brits from Bristol who were in Czech for a weekend party. I ended up joining them for a few hours drinking at a nice small bar and playing cards (the loser of each game having to walk across the street like they had a malformed leg). They were also all wearing a silly t-shirt that they had made for their get-away, and I got one. The whole premise for the party is that they have a friend Dave who can?t drink more than 2 beers before passing out, so they go every year to a different place, buy him two beers, then go party on until they are all falling down.
It was a lot of fun, and while at the bar, I got to talking to a couple locals, one of which offered to show us the next place to go after the bar was closed. We all started going with her, but as soon as we turned around a corner, the brits somehow disappeared (they were quite drunk and had been drinking constantly for 2 days already). So it was just me and her heading to the next bar, and on the way we picked up two german guys and got them to join us. Bar after bar that we went to were closed when finally the girl said she knew for sure where a place was we could go. It ended up being a pretty busy bar, with one stage with a strip tease, and a dance floor in another room. The music was shit, the beer was expensive, but I had no place to sleep, so I just stayed there. At about 5am, I jumped on the subway and headed to the place that I thought would catch me a ride. It was cold and rainy and I didn?t get a car for quite a while, but when I finally did, I was warm and on my way to Pilzn (the home of Pilsen beer). The driver gave me the name of a bar there where you can get fresh beer before it gets pasturised. I?ll have to go there some time.
While waiting on the motorway by Pilzn, a lot of trucks and busses passed me by before catching my next lift which sped past them all and left me waiting again while all the same trucks and busses passed me by again, many of them waiving as they saw me again, but not stopping (oh well). But when I finally got a lift (from a truck) I was on my way to N?rnberg, Germany. I fell asleep in the truck and while I was sleeping, the trucker arranged the next leg of my trip for me which took me to Heilbronn. Again, I slept almost the whole way. At the rest stop I decided to get some food, as I hadn?t eaten more than bread and cheese for the last day and a half.
I was just sitting on the curb eating when a VW bus pulled up and the girl driving asked me if I needed a lift. That was more than an amazing experience. She was playing excellent music, really friendly, and she had some grass with her, which I rolled then and there. She could only take me about 60km before she started going another direction, but the time we had was really great. Never before had I given a hug to someone giving me a lift. I?m going to have to go to Schw?bish Hall and visit her some time soon.
The next car took me to the next motorway (the A5) which goes to Freiburg. I still had about 180km to go and it was just now starting to get dark. I?d been to the reststop before while hitchhiking to Freiburg. It?s funny when you end up hitching from the same place that you had been months or years before. You remember it perfectly. Well, I was casually asking people for a lift and then after about 20 minutes I decided to really press my luck and I asked a guy driving a Porche for a lift, and I got it. We were flying down the Autobahn at over 250km/h when the traffic was light. He ended up leaving me at a tram stop at the endge of the city making it really quite easy for me to get into the center and meet up with Steffi. It was about 6pm when I arrived.
Despite being tired, we went to a party. I ended up talking to a lot of people and finally using my german (which is easier after a few beers and joints) a lot. I was surprised at how well I was doing, but maybe I wasn?t that good. Who knows. But anyhow I can understand a lot more than I can say. Right before leaving I got involved with listening to a conversation between three girls discussing the benifits and drawbacks of their different boob sizes. They thought that I didn?t understand them, but I did, and it was interesting all together.
I ended up going back to Steffi?s place quite late, walking with one of her dorm-mates Saphire (Steffi had left earlier to go drink with a friend). In the morning it was all coffee and breakfast and I got to meet Shosh (who?s been staying with Steffi while looking for a flat in Freiburg). That night we had another party to go to, this time a house warming party for Katja, a friend of Steffi?s. Katja?s boyfriend and I ended up talking quite a lot. He?s from Israel and it was interesting to talk to him about all sorts of things. I also met Lisa, a friend of Katja?s who was also at the party. We all sat around drinking beer, smoking joints, and talking while excellent raggae music was being DJ?d by Katja?s flat-mate.
The next day I joined Steffi, Saphire, and a few other friends to go watch the Freiburg vs K?ln football (soccer) match. It was alright, but no goals were scored, nobody got hurt, no fights, and a lot of players acting like they were hurt when barely colliding with another player (trying to get penalties). All together it was fun to be there, but it would have been better if at least one player was carried off the field bleeding (that?s an influence from my mom who would watch a few seconds of boxing while flipping the channels just to see if anybody was bleeding).
The next few days in Freiburg were spent mostly walking around, reading, relaxing, and sometimes meeting up with someone for a beer. I met with Josi (Katja?s boyfriend from Israel) and we spent the day talking and playing chess with Shosh. Josi is a really good chess player, so I figured that the only way to beat him was to get him stoned, and it worked. I managed at one point in the game to take his bishop and from then on I was able to force even trades until he was left with his king and a rook. I managed all of this on my own and then Shosh told me the very last move needed to make the check make. I had it all on my own, beating Josi (which I thought I couldn?t do) and then the last move I didn?t make. The win was stolen from me. But it was fun anyhow.
One day Steffi took me out for a ride on her motorcycle. It was interesting riding with her as she is smaller than me. When I got on the bike behind her, the back of the bike dropped cosiderably (hell, I weigh 90kg). Riding with someone is difficult, but when that person is heavier than you, the turns are a lot harder, breaking is harder, and accelleration is a lot slower. We ended up going for about 2 hours, north for a while, across the Rhein to France, south again, across the Rhein back to Germany then north back to Freiburg. It was fucking cold, but loads of fun. Now I want to get a motorcycle more than ever (it?s always been on my mind). Next year hopefully Steffi and I will go cycling somewhere together.
I also got to meet up with Lisa a few more times. We went to see a free film together (it was Brazil, but dubbed in German just to make it that more difficult to understand), but of course after smoking a couple joints. Zach, a guy from New Brunswick, Canada who was staying at my flat in Berlin last winter, also joined us. Zach is studying wine making at the university and he said he?ll come to my vinyard and experiment on the wine. Cool, eh? Well, Zach had to leave early, so Lisa and I stayed for a couple more beers before heading off to Shosh?s new apartment, which meant drinking beer and smoking more.
Lisa ended up driving a lot of the way towards K?ln, so I joined her for a lot of the way before hitchhiking the rest of the way. When she dropped me off, there was another hitchhiker. It didn?t take long before I got a lift, then another, and then I was near Frankfurt and the same guy from before was there too, hitchhiking. He told me he only needed to go about 20km to pick up a car and that he would be going to D?sseldorf and that if I came with him he?d give me a ride to K?ln. Excellent. So, when we finally got his car, picked up his girfriend?s brother, then we were off to K?ln again smoking joints on the way.
K?ln was absolutely amazing. By some strange set of circumstances, many people had shown up all at the same time. Nora was back from Spain for a few days, Alke was there, Aint, Marko, and more. I hadn?t seen Nora since Feb 2005 and Alke since she was riding away on a bus in London back to Germany back in late May. Alke had arrived the same day I had. Unfortunately things weren?t all good. Aint?s girlfriend had just gone into the hospital, which put a lot of stess on him. His stess also ended up putting stess on Alke (Aint?s sister). Also, Alke?s previous boyfriend (maybe current but estranged, not sure) was also in town after fours months traveling by bike in Scandnavia, along with me showing up. Also seeing Nora again for the first time in over a year made an impact on her. Alke was a more than a bit distracted and deep in thought. It was nice to see her again, but then wasn?t really the right time for us to get deeper than hugging eachother and talking a bit.
Then suddenly we heard screams outside and everybody headed out to find out what was going on. It ended up being that a guy in the house next door hit his wife and we all spent a couple hours trying to fix the situation which ended with the cops coming and taking the husband away, all of it adding stess ontop of stess. Strange night.
The next day I headed to Berlin. Kristina, Jan, Richard, and a few other people I know from Berlin were having a party to raise money for deportees. I?d promised that I would go. I ended up catching a ride share for 25euros (I had little time because I didn?t start early enough to hitchhike). Durring the ride I was sitting next to a girl from K?ln named Nicole. We sat and listed to music on our MP3 players and talking the whole time. I invited her and her boyfriend who she was going to visit to come to the party.
The party was a total success. Many people were there. There was really good food, music, plenty of beer, and two nice fires in the garden to sit at. Christoph arrived a bit after me and we ended up spending a lot of time talking together. Kristina was busy working at the party, but when she had a little time she came to hang out with us too. She even joined us on the dance floor while we were there. I don?t think I?d ever seen her dancing so much before (she reminded me that she was dancing when she was visiting me in Urbana, but I?d forgotten).
It was just before the sun went up that Christoph and I got to his place. Instead of going strait to sleep we smoked a good night joint, listened to some great music, and talked about what?s been going on since last September. It turns out that the house project that he?s involved with was starting to fall apart. There was some infighting with the people in the house and it looked like the project was going to fail. But it turned out that a couple days later everything came togheter and this project will happen. It?s a really nice house and I?m more than excited about it.
I spent a few days in Berlin and met up with a lot of people I hadn?t seen in a long time. Jonas and Josie spent an evening with me looking for a place with live music and then after that failed, we rented Coffee and Cigarettes and watched it together. Then another day I met up with Kristina for dinner and talking about what we should do for xmas (neither of us celebrating it and wanting to go somewhere). I also paid a visit to my favorite english second hand book store and picked up a bit to read.
After a few days in Berlin I headed back to K?ln, but I?ll write about that another time. Currently I?m starting to think about where to go next. Steffi want?s to go somewhere warm durring her break in January. To me that sounds excellent (I would like to see as little winter as possible this year). A couple of the ideas that we had were to go to Malta or maybe Tunisia. But it?s still more than a month off, so we needn?t hurry. But I?ll probably end up spending a few weeks in Germany visiting a few people and meeting some new ones too (I hope).
In other news, my sister is moving into Chicago (no more suburban life). Also the plans for my brother?s wedding is starting to come together. I still haven?t been told what the limits are for the bachelor party I?ll be throwing for him, but then again, it is quite a ways off from now.
