Making Wine in Hungary (2)
After travel with Steffi in Greece in Albania it was time to go back to Liszo to work on the next phase of wine making. But that?s not all that we did. Read on to know what else was going on in Liszo, Hungary (pictures are up from Greece, Albania, and more from the Vineyard).
When I arrived, it was still quite early in the morning (about 10am). When first arriving in Liszo, Steffi and I stopped in at the bar for a beer to start the day. Then we went up the hill and I showed Steffi the place. Later Carmen came walking up with hill with her super big backpack. A few hours later Dan arrives and by some magic in the universe we all happened to arrive on the same day.
That evening we all partied, got drunk, went to the bar, got more drunk, invited a group of people up the hill from the bar, got more drunk, and eventually we couldn?t walk straight. Also, that evening we met Zolton from the nearby city of Nagykanisza. He came by Dan?s invitation and boy was he surprised to see how we live. We thought that we had scared him off for good, but he came back for more.
Anyhow, things were a bit lazy the next day, so we drank more wine and visited some of the neighbors. It was a lot colder there than the last time, so there was no more sleeping outside.
The next phase of wine making was quite simple. You need to take out all but the very bottom of the wine from the barrels to remove the sediment. Then you clean the barrels and fill them up again. Naturally we tasted all the wine while doing this, yum!
Once we were finished, we just spent most of our time haning out in Liszo. We had a few visitors to the vineyard including two girls from Poland, an american girl, a latvian girl, and a french guy. It was really nice to have them all there.
One of the days we went on the bus to a hot spring and spent the day in saunas, hot tubs, pools, more saunas, and playing on the water slide. Great fun!
But the most exciting thing about coming back to liszo for me was to really start looking for a vineyard of my own. I had put up pictures of the farm that I wanted, but while I was gone they raised the price by 50%, so I went looking for more. I have agreed with a guy to buy his vineyard in March 2007. Starting then, I will have my own vineyard with about 500 liters of wine every year. What does this mean? Am I settling down in Hungary? No, not really. I don?t need to be there but for just a few days every month to keep the place going and the rest is done by nature. I?m going to start looking into how to grow the grapes organically, but I think it might be a year or two before I really get that going. I tried some of the wine from the vineyard that I got and it was really quite nice wine!
So, in March 2007 there is going to be a party in Liszo. Let me know if you can come and I will start making the arrangements. The most important thing is to have fun on this hill. And fun we will have.
The day before I left, Carmen?s boyfriend from Australia finally arrived. I finally got to meet him after hearing so much about him. We all got quite drunk and partied until who knows when. I was the last to go to sleep and first to get up because I had to leave to go to Freiburg to visit Steffi.
The hitchhiking route that I choose took me around the alps instead of throgh them, which in the last autumn is a good idea, I think. So, on the first day I hitchhiked to Prague, spent the entire night drinking beer in the city (I had no place to sleep) then the next day hitchhiked the rest of the way to Freiburg and was there by 6pm. Excellent hitchhiking days. I was never very long out in the cold, which is very important.
I?ll write about my week in Freiburg next time. But I really hope to see a lot of you in the next few years in Liszo, Hungary to help make wine and to drink a little of it too.
